Michael Malone seems to have it all. A wealthy, loving family. A job that fulfills him. Friends he can count on. But something is missing. He’s spent years watching his brother and close friends get married and start families, but it hasn’t happened for him. When an assignment comes up to investigate fallen Hollywood star Vanessa Hale, he jumps at the chance. She’s gorgeous and potentially deadly. Playing the spy game with her might be just the thing to take his mind off his troubles.
A woman with nothing left to lose
Vanessa Hale had big dreams that ended in scandal. She returned home with nothing but heartache and the desire to find her sister’s killer. The trail points to someone at Lodge Corp, so taking a job with Julian Lodge’s mysterious company is her best option for finding the truth. While she hunts for a killer during the day, she hopes to find some solace at night in The Club. Meeting the gorgeous, sexy and seemingly kind Michael Malone, their chemistry sparks in a way she’s never felt before, and Vanessa thinks maybe her luck has finally changed.
A love that might save them both
When Michael’s true motives are revealed, she will have to find a way to forgive his betrayal. The killer has made Vanessa their next target. Working together and stopping this monster is the only chance for them to have the real love they both deserve.

Lexi Blake is a must buy, must read author. This stand-alone includes both Julian and Ian, which makes it all the more enjoyable. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama. It does end with glimpses into the next book(s).
Intriguing storyline with descriptive, emotional writing that draws the reader into each scene. Realistic procedures, actions and reactions. Believable characters with distinct personalities and great banter.
Informative, memorable and sarcastic dialogue.
“No, he doesn’t. Julian Lodge lives off the blood of his enemies, baby. That’s it. That’s how he stays all lean and predatory.’
I will re-read this story and always look forward to, pre-order when possible, new works by this author.
Vanessa didn't know what she was up against when she met Michael Malone. Julian Lodge had hired an investigator from the McKay-Taggert Security to investigate Vanessa because money was missing, she worked with his wife, and she had a sketchy past. Vanessa needed to tie herself to everything her sister was into including her sexuality in The Club. Michael Malone had been assigned to investigate her but also train her in The Club he had planned to tear down every wall she had up, and weed through her facade. She was an actress so she couldn't possible know anything about the truth. He already knew everything he needed to know about her. He was going to swoop in get the information he needed and walk away. What Michael didn't know was that Vanessa wouldn't be the only one letting down her walls. It was time Michael started trusting too.
This story is predictable and Vanessa and Mike spend unnecessary time doubting themselves and questioning whether they should tell each other the truth. Of course the truth will come out and it will cause chaos and maheim, and we all know what will happen. The predictable plot still doesn't take away from the fact that Lexi Blake's story is still really good.
Michael Malone; delicious billionaire, MT operator & Dom gets an assignment he's not thrilled with. He's at a crossroads. His life is full yet he's unfulfilled. Looking around him he sees lots of couples in love and happy families and he is realizing he wants that too. Vanessa Hale nee Jones; media sensation for all the wrong reasons, vilified by the press and gossip rags for her gold digging reputation, former movie star and now assistant to Dani Lodge-Taylor. Michael is investigating her. She's hiding something from him. He's keeping the truth from her. It's all bound to blow up in their faces sooner than later. Once it does building back trust may be a bridge too far. Michael is as determined as she is but in the end love does win out.
Michael has been around for so long, readers will love this inside look at the multifaceted man Lexi Blake has brought to life. Throughout this book he lays himself bare emotionally (an physically of course), becomes the kind of Dom he wants to be and works hard to complete his mission as quickly, and accurately as possible.
Vanessa is a character readers will think they know all about, but she is original and a woman all her own. Forced to be independent at a young age, she is closed off, intelligent but longs to be able to open her heart and be a part of something real.
Readers will love the glance we get into so many of the side characters we love in the M&M world. I especially loved seeing more of the Malone’s and Michael’s place within his family. This story kept me wondering, guessing and loving every twist and turn. The pieces of information dropped relating to future stories lead to nothing but a feeling of urgency, as usual, I cannot wait for more from these strong, intelligent, but broken characters a reader cannot help but love!

The characterisation is absolutely perfect, with individual personalities that allow the reader to form a connection.
The plotline is twisty and utterly entertaining.
For fans of the Masters and Mercenaries series, this is the continuation, with some of the younger characters aging up. This book is all about Michael Malone and his other half, Vanessa.
Michael has always been a favourite of mine, and we have waited years for his story. It does not disappoint.
There is a little BDSM, a little sex and some swearing.
I did find it took me a while to relax into the story, mostly I think because the characters are new, although there is plenty of Ian and Julian written in.
It's always nice to revisit old friends, and I adore the M&M books, but more than that, Lexi Blake weaves a romance like no other.
Just when you think someone isn't getting their happy ending or just deserts Lexi makes it right. Just finished my first full read through in time for the new story on the 16th.
