Miguel de Cervantes Would Hate This!
Verified purchase
I was hoping for something close to the novel and got this mediocre monstrosity instead. While only a tv series could do justice to the book, this movie as with the musical should have concluded with Alonso Quijana condemning the books on knight errantry as the author Miguel de Cervantes wrote about the false idealism of an old man carried away by his imagination and hopes of chivalry. The middle ages were not of chivalrous gallantry but brutality, famines, wars, diseases, and horrible painful deaths as is the case of almost every age for all nations, except perhaps Western Europe after World War Two with the Pax Americana and the United States as the world's policeman.

The acting, direction, and writing were good but not great. Also there are three scenes of Sancho having sex with his wife. There was no nudity but they looked like rutting hogs! I wanted to vomit! Miguel de Cervantes would hate this movie!

Entertaining but not Cervantes

I've come to the realization that here cannot be a good Don Quixote movie, compared to the book. This was entertaining, but I don't know that it is any better than the Lithgow TV version. The best depiction I've seen of the Ingenious Nobleman Sir Quixote of La Mancha is Peter O'Toole.

This movie is far from an in-depth authentic portray of the Don Quixote legends, but we wanted to introduce my son to the stories before our trip to Spain and this got the job done. There were a couple cringe worthy scenes with Sancho and his wife that caught us off guard. If you have little viewers you might want to preview, but they were short and easy to laugh off for middle grades kid.

I remember this movie from some time ago. I have always wanted to read the book and have not gotten around to it. This is so enjoyable and a happy movie to watch. I recommend it highly.
