I AM ONE OF THOSE SUCKERS.
Let me save you that agony. Of course, if you don't mind plot re-runs and insufferable, criminally static characters, don't let me stop you from buying this book. "Don't Ever Tell" begins with our hero, a shy, dumpy author, Charlotte, who meets Mia, a young actress, at a book signing. Mia resembles a younger Charlotte tremendously, a spiffy coincidence which doesn't go unnoticed, apparently, by Charlotte's husband.
Complicated entanglements ensue, with each woman living through unresolved childhood trauma, barely glimpsed past relationship drama, and the busy headaches of present life stresses. Each part of this novel feels hollow, with both of these women seeming shallow and unremarkable. Neither seems a fully realized character, and Charlotte in particular appears to live in a world where very few characters interact in a realistic or natural way. She and her husband are on opposite ends of any sort of relationship spectrum: they never speak to each other about anything real; they avoid communication, touch, and discussion about their lives, children, and situation.
Also: in a stunning and spectacular point in the novel, I couldn't help but giggle. Charlotte loses a drastic and dramatic amount of weight in TWO WEEKS. Now, I'm sure everyone in his or her mind is thinking, "Wow, I wish I had her diet plan," but in reality, NO ONE would ever look past that in real life. In real life, relatives and friends would be FRIGHTENED by such a dire change in someone's appearance. That weight loss would be a harbinger of a terrible disease---a loved one would march the skeletal person to the nearest doctor's office! Apparently this shedding of incredible amounts of weight isn't even commented on by anyone??!! Including her clueless husband?
I'd like to give this book two-and-a-half stars, because the writing is smooth and stylish. Lucy Dawson can write a good novel. What she hasn't done here is give us a complex story. Even the plot is ho-hum. I saw everything coming a mile away--I even had a more complicated plot line and mystery in my head!--which would have made sense, by the way. By the end, the narrative has devolved into something irritating and messy; simultaneously tiring and tangled. The characters remain static, and the entire novel ends on a curiously vapid note, something strangely light for all the darkness preceding it.
Lucy is a very talented writer. Her books always draw me in — the tension, the mood, the suspense, the twists. This book had all of those. But something else I love about her books: her sense of humor. Sometimes dark, sometimes not, usually sarcastic and biting, and always a good addition. For me, it makes the characters seems more real. I laughed out loud at some of the funny dialogue and/or thoughts. (The book review parody was hilarious!)
I won’t do a synopsis, others have given good ones. I’ll just say I liked the unique plot, the intensity of the actions, the well-written characters, the suspense, the various family dynamics, the emotions. There were certainly a few outlandish scenes/actions, but they were done well enough that it was easy for me to get lost in the story and be able to suspend disbelief. In this genre, that’s what sets books apart.
I highly recommend this one!

That is not the case with this book- the second book I've read from the author. I honestly read this in a day, finishing at 2am. And I don't regret it. It is truly a thriller, and I only put it down so that I could feed\bathe\get the kids to bed.
I'd give it 4&1\2 stars due to the constant references to movies. I'm not a movie kinda person so it got aggravating to find a different movie\scene\star mention ed constantly.
Still a fantastic read, I look forward to reading more from the author.
The steadfast relationships rang true to me. Those that ultimately weren't, rang true as well.
I agree that promotional phrases such as "Up-put-downable, nail biting suspense" and such, are over-used!
This is a very good suspense novel by a most gifted writer. This is the second book I've read by her...onward to three!

The reader is not told the identity of Charlotte’s intended victim or the reason for her vengefulness towards them. We do not know the significance of Mia’s involvement or even how the revenge plot is meant to pan out, It was all very mysterious which was what drew me in and kept me reading. I did identify the intended victim and Charlotte‘s underlying motivation quite quickly, despite the somewhat obvious red-herrings but I kept reading to learn exactly what form the revenge would take. Then Charlotte’s plan all went horribly wrong. . .
At which point the novel kind of tanked as well. The finale was rushed and incoherent. The police took only a cursory interest in a seriously violent incident and some important questions were left unanswered. I could just about put up with the far-fetched nature of Charlotte’s plan for the sake of enjoying the story, but not the ludicrous conclusion. Three stars for a tale that held my interest for a good while but bored me at the end.

Update: Quite interested to see life imitating art in the case of best selling thriller 'Something in the Water' by Catherine Steadman - an up and coming young actress rather like Mia …

Good luck having a life while you read this book. You will be cancelling appointments left right and centre to finish it. Best book I’ve read in ages. I loved it.
