Despite her deformed left leg and withered left hand, nine-year-old Leilani Klonk radiates a buoyant and indomitable spirit that inspires Micky. Beneath Leilani’s effervescence, however, Micky comes to sense a quiet desperation that the girl dares not express. Leilani’s mother is little more than a child herself, and her stepfather is educated but threatening. Slowly, more troubling details emerge in Leilani’s conversations with Micky. Most chilling is Micky’s discovery that Leilani had an older brother, also disabled, who vanished after Maddoc took him into the woods one night and is now “gone to the stars.”
While the child-protection bureaucracy gives Micky the runaround, the Maddoc family slips away into the night. So Micky sets out across America to find them–for the first time living for something bigger than herself. Her passion and disregard for danger bring to her side a burned-out detective who joins her on her journey, a journey through terrible darkness to unexpected light. One Door Away from Heaven is an incandescent mix of suspense and humor, fear and wonder, a story of redemption and timeless wisdom that will have listeners cheering.

Koontz weaves this tail with his inimitable descriptive prose that at times resembles poetry. His enduring love for his late Golden Retriever manifests itself as a recurring theme of the spiritual bond between Persons and their Dogs.By being slightly less intelligent than Humans, a dog still possesses an Innocence that allows them to recognize the Playful Presence of our Creator.
All of this provides a back drop for an exciting battle between Good and Evil. I found it to be equally as thrilling even though this was the second time that I have read this novel. I truly recommend choosing this for an enjoyable experience.
P. S. Although I am an unconditional fan of Dean Koontz and everything that I have had the pleasure to read that he has written, my all time favorite Dean Koont novel is still "Watchers"!
I remembered why it's one of my top favorite stories of all time. I fell in love with the primary and secondary protagonists again. I hated the bad-thinking-he's-a-good-guy again.
The young boy in the story is the primary protagonist, and lovable from the start. He's in the worst kind of danger; and when I reread some of that, I find I still hold my breath. When he reveals himself in his true form, I still smile and feel all hopeful.
So, I bought another Dean Koontz book. ("From the corner of his eye". Also an amazing story)
The thing is, my go-to reading genre has always been science fiction. I took a chance on stepping away from that genre, and Mr. Koontz led me by the hand. Thank goodness he's written so many novels, because I'll never let go.

There are about 200 pages in this book that are just filler and not even interesting filler.
The overall pacing is plodding and only one story really piqued my interest.
Even the ending was a big disappointment, all of the imagined scenarios I made up as I rushed towards the end were better than the actual outcome.
I'm really disappointed in this and I only finished the book because I don't like not knowing the ending.
For me his best book will always be Watchers and I've yet to read anything from him that gripped me like that book did.

did not finish this book for ages it took me to read this as far as i did not reccomended

I've read a great many of his books.
Frankly,I think I should have stopped at about half.
