The movie being reviewed here is not the one shown which happens to be of the same name. I have seen that particular movie, and while very good, it is not in the same genre as the actual movie being shown here. The title and stars are correct, but the reviews are of the Helen Mirren movie of the same name. That being said, this movie is very rich in ethos and depth. Fans of movies that depict the many ways in which we interact with and influence people's lives, whether they be family, friends, or even strangers will be moved by this movie.

Mads Mikkelsen is a Danish actor not the title of a movie.
He is however the star of the 2009 German movie "the Door" - "Die Tür"-
A completely different movie ,different gendre, different stars, only commonality is the title (even though in two different languages).Helen Mirren is not in the German movie.

I did not like this movie. I liked the book by Magda Szabo this movie does not do justice to the novel.
Aside the fact that they all speak in accented English (most movies with one of more English speaking actors that portray other countries do) is made worse by some clumsy dubbing, it feels like written by someone that speak bad English, the editing is quite bizarre.
The flashback about the childhood trauma doesn't fit with the the visual feel of the movie.A big part of the movie is the class difference between Emerennc and Magda, but we never find out how Magda and her husband become so priviledged in 1960 communist Hungary. How can you become a bestseller writer under Communist rule? A brief scene that somehow hints a the subject, goes nowhere. The lack of a larger political and historical context reduced the movie to a series of scenes with two women talking a lot but saying little.
Mirren performance is commendable, but even her brilliant portray of Emerenc can't save this movie.
In fact if it wasn't for Mirren there would be no reason at all to watch this movie, and even with that is barely watchable.

The Door- Mads Mikkelsen

Well, it seems like all the reviews are for another movie with the same name. I watched "The Door" with Mads Mikkelsen. It was an excellent foreign film with subtitles. Its a heavy duty drama involving parallel universe's of existence. Still, the same old addage comes to mind; "you can never go home again." Anyway, I enjoyed it and gave it a five. The subtitles were no problem at all.

Not worth it

Stunningly foul, rude, ugly-spirited maid constantly insults and offends her sweet and kindly fool of a lady employer. At least, the lady should have been offended, but she might have been too indifferent or confused to be...anyway, I had to turn it off after she fell completely under the old witch's spell because I just couldn't take any more senseless sourness, antifeminist prattle, and prideful antics. She was so rude to that poor woman from the first, for absolutely no reason. Who the heck did she think she was? I couldn't see why the employer put up with the crazy kook. Maybe some sort of weird class guilt, but that seems like a stretch. None of it made any sense. Such a shame, because I loved how they brought the period to life, and the acting was good. It's just one of those movies where a character is so foul that viewing the film becomes more a chore to prove something than a pleasure to enjoy.

set in a deep mood, gets into the relationship between 2 women, one a successful novelist, the other . . . well. quite a complicated person. slowly unravels her history, sheltering a jewish baby in the hungarian holocaust, a lover of animal forced to watch the slaughter of her bovine buddy. she grows up suitably strange. the difficulty is trying to sort out the very odd behavior of everyone concerned. why they get angry when they do, why they like each other at times, the expectations they have for one another. wound up shrugging my shoulders a great deal, frustrated in trying to understand what i just saw. but on the positive side, mirren gives another gem of a performance, adding to her stellar career, and the mood set here is haunting.

Not only one of my favorite time travel movies, but of all ..so glad to be able to enable subtitles!

In trying to write a screenplay, I'm researching similar type movies and this is not only one of the best time travel movies I've seen, it's up there with my all time favorites. This movie goes to show less IS more. A great way to pull off a movie which could be very expensive and not detract anything. Subtitles: I think this is a German movie, I was dismayed at first thinking I couldn't enable English subtitles but was very pleased to find that I could do so. I used to hate watching subtitled movies but now I'm past that.

Well, I'm Completely Confused...!

Helen Mirren was not in the movie I watched! And I was 3/4 through this film when I realized that I needed to "turn-on" the subtitles for them to actually show...lol. I was actually doing better without the subtitles and just figuring things out on my own! Strange movie where some kind of replacement person would show up to take the place of the other actual person...I'm not sure why or how...it was interesting but still I have no idea as to how this all came about! OK movie but subtitles always brings the enjoyment factor down a notch or two.

If you are a person who simply enjoys a drama and you are not a movie critic, you will most likely love and appreciate this story. I've found over the years that there are few movies that are as good as a book.
I see why Helen Mirren's character is abusive, sullen and cruel. She is locked in the same cruel and abusive past. What she suffered, she became. What is unbelievable? After all, the times have changed and one snobbish rich woman stole her life writing about it and winning precious awards and becoming enriched by their strained, but strangely affectionate friendship. The neighbors accepted her and cared. If the time was set in the 30's, the story would have been about a woman who dare not speak as she did.
There are some unanswered questions that makes the story slightly incomplete. The story is not about Mirren's past life, but it shows a bit to give the viewer a brief understanding. It is at times quite funny and light hearted that takes away from the darkness and is intended to show tenderness in a strange.
I like it very much and felt touched by the relationship formed by the women.
