A great, twisty story well told with a very satisfactory ending. Laid out very well such that you don't have to have detail upon detail in the last 50 pages to explain all the connections that tie everything together - a sign of a very good, practiced author. Kudos, John Hart.
I am looking forward to reading Redemption Road and anything else by John Hart. It's a pleasure to find an author who writes books of such substance and tells his stories so beautifully. LWS
Adam Chase, the oldest boy in this combined( two marriages) family, witnesses a horrific event as an eight-year-old. He quickly changes from "the good boy" to a youngster frequently in trouble. Along the way he develops a friendship with a guy who puts himself in harm's way, frequently drinking and brawling regardless of the opposing odds. Winning a fight wasn't as important as making sure that he participated. Because Adam was in severe emotional pain--and it took a lot to numb it.
A boy is murdered on the family property during a birthday party and Adam's stepmother tells the police that she saw Adam return from the scene of the crime covered in blood. Five years later, Adam returns to the family farm and once again is drawn into conflicting circumstances. Someone out there is committing murder and there are several possible motivations. The problem is sorting out who is behind it all. Adam of course becomes the source of unwanted attention.
Great writing by John Hart with an intricate plot and substantial moving pieces. This is one of those novels that makes you wonder how anyone could put it all together and bring it to a logical though unforeseen conclusion. Seldom is there happiness and light in this story. Darkness seems to swallow it up before it gets a chance to shine. Mr. Hart writes as though he has suffered a great pain in the past because no one could describe it as well as he does without living through something truly formidable.
A great read and highly recommended.
