5.0 out of 5 starsTHANK YOU AMAZON PRIME FOR PRIME SHOWS WORTH WATCHING. THEY ARE TOO RARE!

Amazing production. Very interesting and well acted. Delivers as one would expect a Masterpiece Theater presentation to deliver. Just try one episode and you wont be able to stop watching it. Fascinating to see into the world of an estate and how they worked from all perspectives, the owners/caretakers/staff. I am a typical SCI-FI/adventure junkie but I never saw a Masterpiece Theater production that was not good to me as an adult. It would have bored me as a child but it fascinates me as an adult to see the characters and development of the relationships between them all. Not a bunch of 3d craziness and stunts and noise, but real acting and plots....

5.0 out of 5 stars... the viewers by yanking them from the posh and comfortable confines of a very complicated relationship between hired servants
Verified purchase
The 2nd Season of 'Downton' risked alienating the viewers by yanking them from the posh and comfortable confines of a very complicated relationship between hired servants and turn-of-the-century aristocrats to the social upheavals of the West after WW1. Most writers use this as a soapbox for their political bias, and often reduce characters to 2-dimensional caricatures to hit their pedantic social points home.

This is not the case with Season 2. Just as with the first season, the characters' relationships are complex and authentic, intense and enigmatic. The social shifts happening around them don't diminish their situation as a passionate, dignified family (and "family" includes each and every one of the characters), one who has loyalties tested, moral choices foisted on it, and a sober appraisal of political realities, as terribly complex as they are.

It's shocking to see a show that coasted into such dangerous waters not only remain afloat, but keep everyone one of its inhabitants dry and healthy. Season 2 of 'Downton Abbey' is a marvel. The writers should be proud to have kept the integrity and entertainment level completely intact. I fully recommend this season.

5.0 out of 5 starsA converted skeptic...

I have not been keen on watching Downton Abby for a very long time. It's set in the early 1900's, doesn't look that appealing (I'm more of an action packed, sci-fi girl), and it's about a man, his manor, and his servants....snore...and I'm British!
Could I have been more wrong?
It took a couple of episodes before I started to loathe and love certain characters, and even though I'm only on season 4, I am loving every moment of it. The iciness of Mary, the hypocrisy of Edith, the love between Anna and Mr. Bates, Thomas (grrrr), and the lovely Mrs. Hughes, who holds it all together.
This is the sort of show that (surprisingly) ends up appealing to any connoisseur. You actually bond with the characters much more than you expect to, and you're left wondering what on earth will happen next. I haven't felt like that about a show for years, but I'm very glad Downton Abby has filled that unknown void.

5.0 out of 5 starsBest series ever to come out of England in the 21st century

Sometimes Television can be so good that it is a good thing Television was invented. Downton Abbey for my wife and I surpasses all that we have seen so far. Sometimes she wakes at night worrying about Mr. Bates! It's on your mind and under your skin, Downton is. Every character becomes your own and you are part of the household. Thomas' antics with Ms O'Brien plotting all of the time reminds me of the serious version of Blackadder. Thomas loves to please but falls short or fails to please. The pain of the staff 'downstairs' is equal to the pain of the royalty residing upstairs. The trials and tribulations are never ending. In an odd way, the Earl has to work hard and worry very much so that the staff below have a job to work just as hard to keep the upstairs going about its worries! There is not a moment when action is wasted in this series. Every footstep, be it by the footman or the Earl and his daughters or the ever lovable Granny, the story advances like a chess board. The fact that it is period drama helps enormously. The pain of the times outside is painted on the pain inside. In the words of Dickens, it is the best of times, it is the worst of times, it is the epoch of belief, it is the epoch of incredulity. Downton is drama at its most effective. The class distinction of the English was never so dramatically obvious or observed as it is in this story. It is because everyone's life is important to be heard and that's what makes Downton Abbey the best to come in a decade or so of entertainment. Fav Characters: The most endearing ones are Granny, Mary, Earl, Bates, Anna and Mr. Carson. The others are terrific too but these seem to take the brunt of the force directed against Downton or the force coming from within. Bravo Mr. Carson to keep the household in its state and what a portrayal!

I cannot stop watching this series. If I had all day to just watch, I would watch this from start to end. The different subplots are all interesting and makes you want to know what will happen next. The actors all play their roles brilliantly, you can't help but sympathize with each one. Each episode is a joy to watch so far; I feel like I am back in a time so completely different from the present and so watching this series has been a source of stress-relief for me. Especially love the characters of Lady Mary, Sybil, John Bates and Mr. Carson.

4.0 out of 5 starsBeware - Abridged
Verified purchase
The single discs seasons 1-5 are abridged. If you were lucky enough to have copied the original as it came out, you will notice scenes have been condensed or deleted. If you know the story well, you will miss these scenes and the continuity will feel awkward by what is missing. For those of you who have never seen the series, you won't know what you are missing and will get to enjoy the series. The plus to the individual dvds is the special features included, so much more than on the original television release.

5.0 out of 5 starsDownton Abbey - my favorite series of all times
Verified purchase
Downton Abby is absolutely addicting. Many TV series seem to start out good, but then the plot deteriorates as seasons progress - almost like the writers have run out of ideas. They get convoluted and boring. Not so with Downton Abbey. I have watched every single episode and have not yet seen one that wasn't delightful, extremely entertaining, and leaving me wanting to see more. I think part of its charm is the wonderful actors (I just adore Maggie Smith), the period costumes, and the beautiful sets. Of course, non of this would mean much without interesting plots - and Downton Abbey does not disappoint. Each episode keeps you wanting more. I don't know what I will do when this series finally ends.

5.0 out of 5 starsOne of the best series in tv history.

From the title, you will correctly guess that I am totally in love with this program. It's a remarkable look into one of those pivotal times in Western history when people were confronted by huge changes in their daily lives.
Add to this historic background, a cast of people who become close to being family members, both the lovable and those slightly less so and you have the makings of a first rate story. Julian Fellows is a genius in putting all this together in a remarkable setting. I have watched these episodes several times and will do so again. The only problem here is that the bar of quality has been raised and it is not easy to find comparable entertainment. You may become more discerning in your choice of programming.
