Mortimer Moorecook, retired Wall Street raider, avid collector, is losing his fight against cancer. With weeks to live, a package arrives at the door of his hillside mansion—an artifact he paid millions for…a hominoid skull with elongated teeth, discovered in a farmer's field in the Romanian countryside. With Shanna, his beautiful research assistant looking on, he sinks the skull's razor sharp fangs into his neck, and immediately goes into convulsions.
A rural hospital. A slow night in the ER. Until Moorecook arrives strapped to a gurney, where he promptly codes and dies.
Four well-known horror authors pool their penchants for scares and thrills, and tackle one of the greatest of all legends, with each writer creating a unique character and following them through a vampire outbreak in a secluded hospital.
The goal was simple: write the most intense novel they possibly could. Which they did. A Word of Warning: Within this story, you will find no black capes, no satin-lined coffins, no brooding heartthrobs who want to talk about your feelings. Forget sunlight and stakes. Throw out your garlic and your crosses. This is the Anti-Twilight.

As a long time horror fan, especially where vampires are concerned, I was glad that the "draculas" in this book weren't portrayed in a "Twilight" fashion - they were horrific creatures, blinded to all but their insatiable blood lust, which they sought at any and all costs.
Without revealing any spoilers, it was good to see the central "dracula", the one who started the roller coaster ride into hell, actually give a tip of the hat to the more traditional, Stoker-like vampire that we've all grown up with.
As a critique, however, and my reasoning for three, rather than four stars, too much of a good thing is not always a good thing. I'd have liked to see more interaction with the characters that didn't involve beheading, disemboweling, and other varied means of turning bodies inside out. I have no issue with a gory scene, as long as it fits and supports the story being told, but when these scenes basically become the story being told, I tend to become less interested and more jaded. I would very much have preferred to have seen less of these scenes, and had the authors focus more on that tip of the hat that I referred to above...I won't elaborate further, as I don't want to create any spoilers for those who want to read this, and have not yet had the chance.
The vampires in Draculas are monsters of old, nothing romantic about them. The violence, gore, and terror herein is graphic to the point of extreme horror Some of the content can be said to cross that line, so be aware this is not for the squeamish or easily offended.
This novel is filled with very dark humor, a touch of romance, shocking gore, nerve shredding suspense, and graphic violence. This mixture evokes a delightfully twisted rollercoaster of emotions as the story progresses.
You’ll laugh, you’ll cringe, you’ll lose your lunch.
This terror ride is wholly enjoyable for the discerning and daring reader.
Think of this as a literary Blu-ray boxed set. The novel ends around the 50% mark but the e-book version is chock full of extras. (The more expensive print version contains only the novel.) In addition to the novel, you get a short story collaboration from Konrath and each member of the writing team. I'm not a short story person but enjoyed each of these. "The Sound of Blunder" by Konrath and Wilson is one of the funniest stories I've read. There are also novel samples from each of the contributors. (I'd already read these novels--thumbs up for all.)
For writers, especially those working on collaborations, the bonus material alone is worth the price. Konrath includes e-mail exchanges from the team during the planning stages of the novel and later, a post-mortem e-mail forum on the completed project, including deleted scenes.

It starts with a bang and goes on at breakneck speed in an orgy of violence and gore, with some pretty funny bits as well. Each author-Jack Kilborn, Blake Crouch, Jeff Strand and F Paul Wilson, create characters who are inside the secluded hospital when a vampire outbreak begins. There are no fluffy bunny moments or a break in the action, no waffle or endless descriptions, no classic literature or critically acclaimed writing...this is just vampire action on speed. And I loved it!
Mortimor is a rich man who is dying of cancer and has an extreme idea to cure it. He purchases a vampire skull with horrific fangs and stabs himself in the neck with it, infecting himself. His collapse is immediate and his nurse Jenny and assistant Shanna have to get him to the hospital where he swiftly dies. But Mortimor is going to come back very quickly and is very hungry and eager to infect as many people as he can. Chaos and death are about to reign in the hospital as the uninfected try to escape or hide and the vampire hordes hunt them down.
We follow Jenny and her ex husband Randall who is in hospital after an unfortunate chainsaw accident, the obnoxious Dr Lanz who had Jenny fired from the hospital, Shanna and her redneck cop boyfriend Clay, Adam in the labour ward with wife Stacie, Benny the Clown at the ER after being bitten by a child at a birthday party who is stuck to him by the braces on her teeth and Carla the nurse on the labour ward. There are also a lot of people at the hospital for various reasons who are about to become a walking and screaming buffet!
It is Lanz who manages to get a call in to the police to alert them while all hell is breaking out around him. Victims are growing fangs as their own fall out, the sign of infection, and a full scale bitefest is under way. Hospital staff are trying to close wards and protect the vulnerable patients as monsters stalk the dark corridors. Shanna comes back from a coffee to find Mortimor had died, reanimated and is chewing on people. Benny the Clown discovers that being chomped by a child is going to be the start of a really bad day. Jenny begins to see the now sober Randall in a new light as the injured man uses his chainsaw to protect her and a ward full of kids. Oasis is discovering that being a child vampire makes it kinda tough to get a decent meal. Adam's wife needs blood after the delivery but does he really want to venture down to the basement to get it?
As well as the gore, then is some seriously inappropriate humour which I really enjoyed. Without a doubt, my favourite character was Benny the Clown with his squeaky shoes. As he arrives on the children's ward where others are hiding...
"Benny the Clown had torn open the man's abdominal cavity, his claws cradling several loops of glistening intestines. But rather than gorging on them, the clown was stretching and pulling the bloody loops, twisting the organ into knots. Familiar knots.
'Is that...a flamingo?' asked the old woman."
LOL! I was laughing when I read that! Comedy and horror are great when put together well, like in Evil Dead 2, and that was one of the highlights in this book. It was so refreshing to read a book where the death toll gives 24 a run for it's money, where the plot is just a crazy bloodbath and where you are totally entertained from start to finish.
If you like gory horror with a few chuckles in it which is not to be taken seriously, then Draculas is for you!

A Romanian finds an old skull buried in his field. Rumour has it that it could be the skull of a vampire from centuries ago.
Mortimer Moorcook is a multi billionaire. Trouble is he is terminally ill so his money isn't really of much use........or is it. For an undisclosed sum of money he buys the skull from the farmer. He has an anthropologist on his staff studying these skulls for some reason that isn't entirely clear. When he takes delivery of the skull and they examine it, He clamps it's jaws together biting his own neck.
The anthropologist Shanna and Mortimer's nurse Jenny fear the worst when he starts to convulse and they rush him to hospital, where........to put it mildly.........all hell breaks loose.
As you can probably guess old Mortimer turns into a "dracula". When he bites you......you turn......immediately and he doesn't care who he bites!
As i said earlier this is not Twilight. There are a couple of parts of the book where old flames are reignited but definitely no romance. There is gore.....a lot of gore.....with some extra gore thrown in. The story is set entirely within the hospital building. People chasing draculas and draculas chasing people. The characters are great and you definitely get a sense of fear for them as they battle to survive. You cringe when something happens that you might think would infect them. But don't get too attached, the authors are not afraid to kill anyone off.
At times I found this to be a bit repetative, (I mean there are only so many ways you can describe draculas attacking people) but still it is a page turner with no let up in the action from start to finish.
This story was written by 4 different authors who each were tasked to write the portions for individual characters or scenes. Taking that into account this is a fantastic collaboration between 4 very like minded and talented authors.
The extras that also come with this Kindle version are fantastic. You get 3 short stories (I will review these separately). The best content for me of the entire book though was the email thread sent between the 4 authors over a period of about 5 months. In these emails you get to see the creative juices flowing between all 4 as they fire ideas at each other and chop and change the scenes to make the book what it is.
Enjoyable page turner in the story but for me the bonus content was the selling point in this giving a unique insight into how a story is put together.

The story is a simple one, a dying man pins hopes of his recovery on an ancient skull with characteristic long teeth. He bites himself with the skull and is rushed to hospital where he dies, naturally he doesn't remain dead for long. So starts a night of terror for the people in the hospital, the vamparic infection spreads rapidly and soon the few survivors are in a desperate battle for their survival.
As I mentioned at the start of this review the vampires here are terrible beasts and they thirst only for blood making them a deranged but deadly foe, there are however a few nods to more urbane vampires of Dracula's ilk and some oddities in between. The clown in particular is a lot of fun to see in action.
This book is very fast paced, the action gets going quickly and keeps up the pressure all the way through. It also has a very visual feel to it, I could easily imagine this making a decent action horror film. The writing is solid and is a testament to the four authors' skill that they can weave a tale together and it not feel disjointed.
There's a good mix of characters, both with the survivors and the vampires that provide some differing viewpoints throughout the story. I have a personal bugbear with books and extras, with this the counter was only halfway done when the book finished and the extras began. As I say that's a personal annoyance and in fairness the book's blurb does mention the extras prominently.
Overall I'd rate this as a fun read, well worth checking out if you like action horror.

This is told in little chunks of story, each one from a different point of view from each individual involved. You can tell the differing author styles through the characters and really lends a great “voice” and out look on each person.
The basic premise is that a Dracula type skull is found, surrounded by legend it is then bought and delivered to a dying millionaire, who (of course!) allows it to bite him….. and so begins the horror in a little backwoods hospital when he is rushed their by his palliative Nurse and researcher/treasure finder.
The varying characters via their different authors approach the monsters in different ways, the humour is as huge as the teeth.
The gore is free flowing, abundant with plenty of blood and bits. Amongst it all are two very touching love stories; however, they both have issues!
When Benny the Clown starts to make flamingos from intestines I could not stop giggling and trying to explain this to Hubby was not a good moment in my marriage, I think he seriously started to question my sanity. However the various drawings throughout the book helped him see why I found it quite so funny!
This was a fantastic, engaging and grotesque read, some parts made me gag, some cry and some laugh so hard I needed to actually put my kindle down and calm myself.
We, the reader, are then treated to a giant flowing interview between all four authors and how they managed to pull this off.
Then we are given about 50% of bonus materials which is simply staggering each author gives us a full blown novella as follow on.
Finally we are promised many more sequels so I will be on the look out for these. All of these authors are fantastic to read and I can’t wait to get my mitts on more of their work.

Draculas, it is fair to say, is written to a certain formula.
And, for me at least, it was a formula that worked well.
A simple, but nonetheless effective plot, and paced at breakneck speed throughout. It is a novel which doesn't take itself too seriously (and for me this boosted its appeal).
Also, kudos to the four authors for keeping it seamless. It was virtually impossible to identify the switch in writing styles. Nicely done!
Draculas is a rip-roaring, tour de force in vampire entertainment. At times it could have done with pausing for a breath, just to slow things down slightly, but for the most part it all came together really well.
To sum up: If you are looking for a novel full of literary depth, then this ain't the book for you. But if you are willing to be grabbed by the short and curlys, and dragged, kicking and screaming along a ride of blood soaked terror, then this is the kiddy! It's precisely as the authors intended.
High octane!
