The ancient prophecy speaks of the five, those who will come to save all of dragonkind. Like most prophecies, it leaves out a lot of the important details. The very ordinary elf girl who runs for the hills - and gets lost in a forest instead. The dragon egg, precariously perched high in a tree on a dark winter's night. And what happens when egg meets girl.

This story lacks any conflict except for the girl's fear of heights which was brought on by one encounter and sparks nightmares and other reactions that I didn't quite buy into. Everyone liked the girl and her dragonet, so no people conflict. There was a potential problem about whether her important family would let her stay with the dragon school that could have developed into a conflict but all that vaporized into thin air and was never mentioned again. There was no fighting since everyone is peaceful now. And no idea at all about what this girl will do to fulfill her destiny besides a vague 'she needs to fly'. Though she was singled out as being super special, she never did anything in this book. Even the end was anticlimactic - I was expecting her to resolve her issue in a more dramatic way, but nope, didn't happen. We'll clearly have to wait a while before we see her doing anything to warrant her special status. And the overall arc that is introduced with the events in the past never gets resolved either - apparently that's in a future book as well.
I got the impression that we'll have five of these types of stories in total before we get into the main plot of how these special people will 'save the dragons'. If so, I think I'll pass until we actually get to the real action of saving rather than sitting around with more training, especially if they are priced the same as this story. The writing is fine, but I need more of a plot.
I would be much happier with a more fleshed out "story" with more backline and history of characters and situation.
I am trying to express my slight disappointment without any spoilers. I do look forward to the next installments. However, I will most likely wait to read them when they are in a multi-episode offering of some sort.
I wasn't sure what to expect but what I found was a heart felt story that reminds me of when I was young and just discovering dragons were not always the mean monsters that were typical in a lot of stories when I was growing up until I found Anne McCaffrey's Pern series.
This is not a fast past action book, it is one that draws you in through the strength of the characters and is about coming of age, finding a true connection beyond anything you've ever know, and about facing your fears and overcoming them.
Lotus is a daredevil dragon, afraid of heights. Sapphire is an insecure elf, constantly second guessing herself always trying to do the right thing. Between the two they learn that they both are stronger than each believes, and standing together, they can accomplish more than they ever expected.
I should also add that while there are 5 books in this series, each book is fairly self contained but there is a continuing storyline through to the end. Once you start these, you won't be able to stop.

This story feels heavily influenced by Anne McCaffrey’s Dragons of Pern series, something I grew up reading. In the same way that the dragons of Pern bonded with humans, the dragons in this book bond with elves, also often when quite young.
The story is about bravery and overcoming fear. It’s about duty and love and picking yourself up one more time when you don’t believe you can, just to achieve something that needs doing.
It’s a sweet story and filled with morals and ethics and all that good stuff. It would be a great book for younger adult.
