While crafting this novel, I was frequently asked if war women really did exist. Indeed, they did, and they lived and battled much the way Senior Warrior Fierce Mink does. The average Muscogee woman was powerful in her own right. She owned all property (a man owned only his weapons and horse), and she was never denied any dream. In the words of my brilliant Red Stick friend, Ghost Dancer, "in the old days, everything revolved through the women."
To give you a more detailed picture of 1817 Creek society, I'll just give Ghost the mic. "A child was a member of the mother's clan. Her blood was all that mattered, not the father's. Only the women had the power to direct your life. No war, no hunts, no chunkey games, or stickball, fishing, gathering anything, unless the women declared that it would be. You could not even court or romance a girl without the women's approval. All of the headmen and warriors lived by the laws and decisions made by the women."
Yes, the men had their councils where ultimate decisions were made. They were the head of the home and the village, but as the old saying goes, the women were the neck that turned the head. And what a strong neck it was.

I am an avid reader. Among multiple interests, I have grown to enjoy Native American fact-based fiction. April Gardner's entire Frost Moon series is one of best ever! The sincere exploration and demonstration of humanism - consideration, pain, support, thoughtfulness, regret, commitment, forgiveness and love - is written in a manner that places the reader right there in place and time...beckoning mental and physical intervention! The recitation of Tall Bull's heart for War Woman was possibly among the best writing that I have ever encountered; kos, it took WEEKS to complete the book... Simply b\c of the intensity, meditation during and my not wanting the story to end! What sacrifice! What boundless love! The most beautiful journey to and experience of salvation that any writer (of my readings) has Ever extended an indigenous people. Absolutely, a beautiful and unforgettable work!

Drawn by Frost Moon....Tall Bull, Mink (and he love of her Jesus), their heartbreaking and exquisite journey to faith, as well as the native American plight...all deeply and beautifully written into my mind and heart. I'm so glad I'd read this after reading, for the second time, Bitter Eyes No More in Drawn by the Frost Moon. Now, seeing the back story of Tall Bull's motivations and the depth of pain in Mink as she had first encountered Lillian...is a privilege and honour. You will LOVE reading this in-depth saga of characters who grab your mind and heart!
And, once again, I'm saddened that this beautiful book has come to an end for me and am anxiously awaiting the next!!
You will want to read these books again and again...I already have, and just like a great movie, I found I'd missed "something" the first time around.

I have loved, loved learning about the Creek nation and their customs, way of life, and insights into their famous leaders in the history of our country. They have come alive in my heart, and considering my great grandmother, pictured below, was full blood Cherokee from Georgia...perhaps it's right and fitting.

War Woman is such a complex woman...I would love to have had her as a friend! (not as an enemy, that's for sure! LOL) She is so loyal and Honest...two qualities that are so wonderful in anyone! And Tall Bull...as much as I disliked him before, I now love him so much more!!

And, of course, we have the joy of seeing and hearing from Totka again.

Love, Love, Love this book...along with all the others from this author. And you will too!!

Love the war woman was book five in series of Dawn by the frost moon. This series just gets better and better, with each book that I read. I like that the series is loosely based on real events and characters. This book was Minks story and also had characters from the previous books appear. Lots of Indian history and traditions and I liked that there was a glossary, in the back, that explained the unusual words and phrases. These books will keep you reading way into the night, or early morning, as it is hard to just leave the story without finding out what happens next. Excited to start reading the next book in this series.

These are the types of stories that I long for in Christian fiction. This is not fluff Christian fiction and it is not predictable, nor does it play it safe. The opening scene had me all in my feelings and that is when I knew that this book, this story was going to be adventure that I did not want to end. This is the kind of story where you feel as if you know the characters; they are like old friends. You want to spend time with them, you long, no need to see how their story will end. You want to shield them from all pain and sorrow. And you enjoy their spiritual journey. It's beautiful. It is intricately woven within the story and does not feel out of place or like the author just threw it in there to be able to say this is Christian fiction. After you read a story like this, your expectations are high. April Gardner has taken her place among a group of authors that know it is okay to color outside of the lines of what people think Christian fiction is supposed to be.

I loved this, once again, roller coaster ride of a book. I am glad that I read Bitter Eyes No More and then immediately read this one. I didn’t have time to forget anything, and this story helped shed light on many things I was wondering that happened behind the scenes of the first book of the series. I started this book wondering if it would be bittersweet considering the prologue. I didn’t want to put these books down so if you are like me, you might become obsessed to finish also. In the previous books with Tall Bull as a secondary character, I felt dislike often for his actions and the feelings of the other characters toward him. I was pleasantly surprised to see what he was really feeling and sacrificing in this book compared to his perceived behavior in Bitter Eyes No More. At first his blindness definitely rankled, but his transformations throughout the book allowed me to fall in love. The author explains that he was a challenging character, but her work paid off for me. Fierce Mink was beautiful throughout, and I am glad that she was finally able to feel the love she felt for others returned. Ten Cats was a bittersweet character that caused a roller coaster of emotions in me as I tried to decide if he was good or bad, but in the end I really liked him. Despite the harsh reality of war between clashing cultures, Christ’s love prevails leaving you with hope for the future! Sign me up for the next one!
