Dreamgirls Movie is Finally Complete!
Verified purchase
I loved Dreamgirls when I saw it on stage all 3 times (the Broadway touring company, a bus & truck reduction of the Broadway version, and the Paper Mill Playhouse re-imagining). And while I liked the film, I always thought it was just a tad too severely edited. It seemed a bit choppy, like there were pieces missing. Now at last the original director has released a "Directors Extended Edition," and the movie finally feels complete. The cast is phenomenal, the production values are top notch, and the new songs are not bad at all. I heartily recommend this version to fans of the film (and show). However, one minor note: it is a little light on extras. There are 4 Jennifer Hudson screen tests or auditions, and that is it. There are rumors of "2½ hours of extras," but that is not the case. There are 2 discs: one is the DVD and the other is the Blu-Ray. They are almost identical, except the DVD version only has 3 Jennifer Hudson screen tests, and the Blu-Ray has noticeably higher definition in picture quality. The packaging includes a small booklet with lyrics of most of the songs and full-color photos of the songs being performed. Notice to graphic designer: the film credits on the bottom half of the back cover are absolutely illegible due to dark on dark ink colors. Somebody should have noticed that. But I am being picky. The movie itself is just wonderful. And when it was over, I had to fight the urge to watch it all over again immediately.

Special Features
Verified purchase
No one else has listed the special features, so I thought I'd list them here.

**Note -- When you go to the "Dreamgirls 2-disc Showstopper Edition" page, there's a note that says, "There is a newer version of this item: Dreamgirls [Blu-Ray]." This is not true; the "newer version" has the bare bones special features that the original DVD 1-disc version has and does not include the "Showstopper Edition" bonus features.

Special Features included on this Blu-Ray 1-disc set:
12 Extended Musical Numbers - Including a Jennifer Hudson Performance Not Seen in Theaters HD
Music Video "Listen" by Beyonce Knowles
Dreamgirls Soundtrack Promo

So, if you want the 115 minute documentary and other special features, you'll need to order the 2-disc "Showstopper Edition."

Captivating Entertainment. Don't Miss It.

If you remember music from the 60's, you know that the Supremes was a group of 3 black women who dominated the music world, releasing hit after hit for Motown and propelling lead singer Diana Ross into super stardom. This story is fiction but closely modeled on the Supremes rise to glory and the challenges faced by black entertainers to break the color barrier. Not an original take but the cast of this film is extraordinary in every single way...acting, singing and costuming. There are no bit players here. This is an all-star cast. Of course, Jennifer Hudson in her very first appearance is a standout as the temperamental "Effie", singing "I'm Not Going" with all the emotional depth and powerhouse voice that earned her an Oscar. Eddie Murphy as a fading R&B star manipulated into failure and self-destroying with drugs is a common tale, but who knew Murphy could bring it and sing it with such passion!!

One Night Only

You want all my love and my devotion
You want my love and soul, right on the line
I have no doubt that I could love you, forever
The only trouble is, you really don't have the time
You've got one night only, one night only
That's all you have to spare
One night only
Let's not pretend to care
One night only, one night only
Come on, big baby, come on
One night only
We only have 'til dawn
In the morning this feeling will be gone
It has no chance going on
Something so right has got no chance to live
So let's forget about chances
It's one night I will give
One night only, one night only
You'll be the only one
One night only
Then you have to run
One night only, one night only
There's nothing more to say
One night only
Words get in the way
One night only

Very exciting and excellent singing and story line.

The singing in this video was great as well as the makeup and costumes. I enjoyed the storyline and it took me way back to the "Motor City" days when music was a big deal. The actors were great especially Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Hudson. It showed just how it was for singing groups and those that struggled to make it to the top, back in those days. I liked the live play "Dream Girls" a little more, but over-all it was a good movie and I enjoyed it. I watched it several times since the songs were outstanding especially when she sang "I'm not going". I recommend this for anyone who likes movies like the 5 heart beats, or the Temptations. It is just as good if not better than those but similar.

Great musical, amazing sound
Verified purchase
This newest edition of Dreamgirls takes an already amazing movie to new heights. First of all, Dreamgirls is one of the finest adaptations of a Broadway musical since South Pacific. Most important, the sound quality of this disc reaches new levels of quality -- especially if heard in Dolby Atmos. The musical numbers shine. Jennifer Hudson's Oscar-winning performance is but one highlight. Eddie Murphy is a revelation as the James Brown-style character. Beyonce is superb as a singer (as you might expect) but as an actor as well. I can't wait to watch this one again.

I was absolutely not disappointed because she absolutely smashed it
Verified purchase
I have been waiting to see Dreamgirls for quite some time, and finally had a couple of hours to rest and do nothing, so I ordered this up on instant viewing because I wanted to see Jennifer Hudson in her role. I was absolutely not disappointed because she absolutely smashed it. I don't know why she was nominated for Supporting Actress when the center of the story really revolves around her, but I think that she would have won whatever she was nominated for; she won everything as Supporting Actress for which she was nominated. Everyone's performance was stellar, but Jennifer Hudson outshined them all. What a fantastic story. I hadn't read up on it at all ahead of time. I only knew that Jennifer Holliday played the role first, and I saw her singing And I am Telling You, and fell in love with the song immediately. As I watched, I could see that this was the thinly veiled story of Motown records, DIana Ross and the Supremes, with a little of the Jackson 5 thrown in for good measure. I didn't even recognize Jamie Foxx in his role, he played it so well as did Beyonce Knowles. But the Academy Award, as far as I'm concerned, goes fully to Jennifer Hudson for such a superior performance. Watch this film! You will not be disappointed.

Boring
Verified purchase
A disappointing, colossal waste of some really extraordinary talent. Poorly adapted to the screen. Terrible dialogue. Way too many screens ending with the line "We're through!" The music has none of the character or spark of that R and B Motown era. Two stars because the costumes were fantastic. Otherwise I'd give it one star for its overall insipidness.
