This is the best butane soldering iron I have owned

I was left to decide between this and the Power Probe soldering iron. I use the Power Probe brand at work quite often, but with this being cheaper and with the spotty reliability of the Power Probe, I decided on this Dremel brand instead. The carrying case is very nice and comes with different ends for different types of projects. I think the build quality is great and feels like it is very durable for everyday use. The tank seems to last about as long as the couple other brands that I have used in the past which is usually enough for 1 or 2 uses, but with a butane refill on hand it is not a very big deal as it is so quick and easy to fill. The temperature that this can get to far exceeds what I would ever need it to do (about 1/3 - 1/2MAX for soldering in my experience). I recommend this brand highly, and between the Power Probe and this I would choose this again any day.

Caution: Replacement tips NOT available (May 2018)

Very happy with this as a soldering iron. It is excellent! HOWEVER.... Soldering iron tips wear out which is to be expected. Dremel is not currently (May 2018) selling replacement tips. So buy it, use it, and when the tip wears out you have to replace the entire soldering iron, you cannot simply buy a replacement tip. The only way to get a new tip is to buy a whole new soldering iron kit. I don't know why they pulled the replacement tips off the market.

Very disappointing as I finally found a soldering iron that worked good and lasted a long time.

Worked great for soldering wires

I'm glad I purchased this tool. Occasionally I need to do solder wire repairs on airplanes and this provides ease of use thanks to its compact size. The only down side to this tool is the exhaust port. I think the design is a trade off. Unlike other butane solder guns that I've used, the flame isn't really able to be blown out, its protected thanks to the design. Bad thing about the design, if you're not careful the hot exhaust gases coming out the side port may burn something in a tight space. I just turn the fuel off when the tip is nice and hot and do what I need and if I need to heat it up take it out of the tight space and heat it up. If thats not ideal then you can simply rotate and aim the port away from anything it can damage. I still think its a 5 star worthy tool that was worth making space for in my tool box.

This torch works well for precision work, as long as you can get it to lite. You'll need a new flame defuser to fix that but
unfortunately... YOU CAN'T GET A NEW FLAME DEFUSER -----> LOL
Go figure.
At the better part of a 40 dollar bill you'd think the damned thing would be serviceable. So, unless you happen to like spending 32 bucks on a tool that magically turns into a paper weight fairly quickly, I'd skip this in favor of something you can actually get critical parts for.

No portosol, but works great for a fraction of the cost!

I own several Portosol units and have used them for the past 20 years. I needed a replacement the next day and the only thing I could find that would arrive in time was this one. I was skeptical as it looks huge in the photos. Figured for the price it was disposable if it could just get me through the job. First off, it is much smaller than it looks in the photos. It is about as large as my largest Portosol iron. This thing is LOUD! Sounds like a jet engine on take off when using it and uses butane just as fast. It heats up fast and gets HOT! I had no problem soldering 10 gauge wires with it. I would not suggest using this for and PCB board soldering as it gets too hot and hard to control at lower temps. The head is also very large and would be difficult getting in and around components. However, if you are looking for something to solder a wire in a car or appliance, for the price this is the one. If you are planning on using this for anything other than a hobby, I would suggest ponying up the extra dough and buy a Portasol. You will make up the difference in the butane savings over time. This iron really sucks up the butane! Make sure you have a bottle on hand if you plan on using it for any extended time. I would suggest shutting it off and restarting it again when you need it if you need a break. The tip does get loose when heated up as most irons when new. They need to be tightened up while hot when the metal has expanded. Just be VERY careful and don't try using the small wrench included with the iron to do this while hot. That one should only be used when cold.

So. Feature's wise, and ease of use, form factor, etc. This is a terrific product. I honestly loved it and found that I used it a lot after purchasing it.

Sadly after 1 year and 5 months of use, only filling it with Whip-It! (which is supposed to be a very high quality very many times refined butane for torches like this), it simply stopped working. I have opened it up and taken a look at the internals, all the internals look like they are in perfect working condition, the igniter still creates a spark, listening to lighter it seems that gas is coming out, you can even feel the stream of gas coming out with a finger. But for some reason, even sparking with gas coming out, it just won't light. Spent a good 3 hours trying to figure out what the problem might be, and I'm stumped.

For 40 bucks, It would be 5 stars, if it lasted 10 years. But for 1 year and 5 months and then for the thing to stop working with no signs of physical damage and everything appearing to operate as it should, I'd say look for something easier to service.

Dremel makes awesome little tools. I have a few of them. I bought this on a recommendation needing to service some wiring in a place without power. It got the job there. I then tried to use it at home for rewiring a guitar and while it gets the job done, it's tedious with the exhaust (it can burn from a distance!) and it consumes a lot of fuel. I had to refuel it 3 times on this job.

The attachments make this tool that much more versatile and perhaps you could do some artwork with it.

I have had the Dremel Versa Tip soldering torch since February 2016 and I don't know how I survived without it. I manly purchased it for heat shrink tubing as apposed to buying a electronic heat gun which are expensive and have very limited uses. Up until I got the versa tip I was using refillable lighters the kind with the goose neck for heat shrink tubing. On the lighters the igniter coil tends to melt and stop working after several uses but I can tell you that the igniter design on the versa tip keeps it from melting away and I don"t ever see it failing (and it hasn't so far). I cant tell you how much I love finding new uses for the versa tip and just how versatile it is. It makes a grate cordless soldering iron very natural to use if your use to a pencil soldering iron. I like it when I don't want to bother with bringing my soldering station or don't have an outlet nearby. The hot knife is grate for cutting synthetic rope and Styrofoam. It also works as a regular torch if you take all of the attachments off. One piece of advice if you decide to buy the versa tip you should buy high quality filtered butane to keep the versa tip from clogging, I have been using 1 can of Newport 300ml Ultra Purified Butane Fuel Zero Impurities with out any problems and I would recommend it for the versa tip.

By the way in case you missed it the versa tip dose not come with butane but this was not a deal beaker for me.

Colossal waste of time. Used it once it worked fine. Next time not so lucky. Couldn’t get it to ignite and after ripping it apart come to find out it was the orifice. It was clogged with a foreign spongy material I have no idea if it was there originally and it hardened or how the hell it got in there. After digging it out the tiny hole was still clogged. I tried using brake cleaner, pb blaster, and wd40. I really needed it at the time so my last resort was taking the tiniest drill bit I can find and very lightly trying to dig out the obstruction. When I finally got it, it was too late. I put it back in the unit and I was now getting gas but when it finally dig ignite it was out of control and not a very hot flame. I don’t care about the money it costed me, it’s more of the fact I bought a tool that I thought was a higher end name and it screwed me when I needed it. Wasted a whole bunch of time for nothing and still didn’t accomplish the task at hand.

I've had this for a year now and I can't tell you how many times it's come in handy. I've used the soldering tip probably the most and it's great for doing remote soldering. I've used it on my boat, my tractor, my truck, outdoor low voltage lighting, etc.

I've used the heat deflector in conjunction with the soldering tip for heat shrink several times and it's worked great.

Finally I've used the x-acto type knife and it's AWESOME! It's wonderful for slicing tie downs, ropes, seat belts, vinyl, whatever you've got. It slices it and seals it at the same time and it's absolutely brilliant!

I'll be brutally honest. I have a weller station and stopped using it when this arrived. Then it was so good that I also ordered the 2200 pistol grip configuration. If you're looking at reviews trying to decide, go buy one right now. I race RC cars so light, portable, convenient, fast to heat, are all critical features for me. I'm here to tell you this thing meets all of those expectations. It's not just a soldering iron though. It's a tool for wood art and more. I can't speak for the wood burning attachments and how well they work, but based on how well it solders, I don't think you'll have any heat issues. This thing is legit. But one.

The soldering iron itself is well designed and made of quality materials. I've had a lot of gas soldering irons, and this one is by far the best so far. But, the case for it is garbage. It's basically a cookie tin. No hinges, no latches, etc. I worry that when it's bouncing around in a tool box or the back of my truck that it's going to come open, and that over time the lid will stop fitting tightly. Also, the inside part that holds the soldering iron and the parts is cheap vacuum formed plastic with a fake felt coating. This product would be twice as good if it had a quality case with hinges and latches, and a foam interior. I will probably have to buy a Pelican case or a quality handgun case to put this stuff in long term.

Also, after owning several of these soldering irons, it's imperative that you use filtered butane. If you use cheap stuff, you'll get dirt in the nozzle and it won't work right. You can get replacement nozzles for this one through Dremel. None of the other ones I've owner had any parts availability, you either figured out a way to clean the nozzle, or you threw it in the trash.

I use Colibri in mine. Filtered butane is expensive now because people are buying it in large quantities to make hash oil for their vaporizers. But, this thing doesn't seem to use a lot of it.
