The reviews I see listed under the red and green peppers mix are actually for other items rather than the peppers. (The wording seems oddly similar in the positive reviews.)
I bought the 10 lbs size on Dec. 9, 2017 (I could swear it was Prime), the transfer of funds occurred on Dec 11, 2017, and, after many notes of excuse, the box arrived last week. The box was far too small for the two plastic bags inside (5 lbs each, apparently) and someone had merely taped the open top of the box to the bags inside. The bags and contents were visible without opening the little box.
I have used dried bell peppers in my cooking in the past, although from other companies. These peppers from It's Delish were all brownish-black with lighter colored seeds. I tried cooking with them without water hydration by making a meatloaf mix that I kept in the refrigerator for a day before baking. Very bad, no colors visible except the seeds. The I tried rehydrating for a couple of hours before using in my chicken stew recipe. Black clumps throughout my stew, some pale seeds and hard pieces that hurt our mouths and teeth--I presume stems or some other detritus from the processing area. The taste is not of bell peppers, although it does taste somewhat vegetative, and there are no colors except brownish-black and the pale seeds. I actually used this product one more time in my chili con carne recipe. Horrible! My husband and I and my in-laws have been sick since then with what seems something like dysentery.
For some reason Amazon forbids me to review the actual order or to try to get a refund. $80 is too much for us to forget about, and I don't want other potential consumers to become ill as we did.
I bought it so I will use it but I will buy Harmony House Dehydrated Celery next time.
A pound of dried spinach fills two half gallon mason jars! I like that these are smallish, consistent sized flakes and very easy to just toss into pretty much everything. Everyone likes to joke about spinach being 105% water and a whole box shrinking into a tiny handful of cooked spinach.... I'd rather buy it pre-dried and not have to mess with all that extra liquid. For example, I ADORE spinach omelettes and quiches, but the water released by the spinach as it cooks totally ruins the texture of the eggs. With these, you can toss them into the egg mixture dry, and just go about your business. If you want to STUFF the omelette with spinach, when you're nearly done sauteeing the onions (because you GOTTA have onions in there too!), toss a handful into the pan, throw a splash of white vermouth in there with the pan still hot, then remove from the heat and cover. It will absorb some liquid and is then ready to use.
Also there's nothing better to make spinach dips.
So far just this week I have used this dried spinach in black bean soup, ultimate veggie queso dip, and mixed into the 'crust' of a dehydrated hashbrowns based pizza.
Be like Popeye. Eat your spinach.
The red bell peppers are also awesome. I got a pound of these too, and it's a half gallon mason jar plus about a pint. I'm putting these in everything too. It's miraculous how they quickly puff back up into beautiful bright red little pepper nuggets, with all the flavor still intact. Like the spinach, I'm throwing handfuls in all SORTS of things!
The celery is good too. Sweet, fresh, herbal scent just the way it should be. It too filled a half gallon plus a pint. I find myself using it for stocks and sauces.
I have to say, this is a pretty convenient way to have veggies on hand for those dishes you only want them there for flavor and color without having to, say, chop up a whole pepper for just enough bits to make your party dip colorful. There's zero waste, and zero half-used vegetables sitting sadly in the fridge.
We love red bell peppers, but we started using freeze dried red bell peppers to supplement vitamin A.
(actually beta carotene, which is converted to vitamin A, with no risk of overdose. Also, red peppers have about 10 time the beta carotene as green bells. 1Tbs of freeze dried red bells provides daily Vit A needs for an adult.)
In any case, we started with another product that is MUCH more expensive. My wife found the It's Delish product.
After trying it: it tastes just as good, has better color and is much less expensive.
As far as the customer service: they originally sent us the wrong product. OK, mistakes can happen. I called Amazon; they connected me to It's Delish; and It's Delish immediately shipped out a replacement and sent a prepaid return label to return the wrong product. We received the correct red bells and they taste great.
We are happy campers :-).
