Drown Her Sorrows (Bree Taggert Book 3) Kindle Edition
|New from||Used from|
A Wall Street Journal bestseller.
Sheriff Bree Taggert is blindsided by a killer’s devious plan in number one Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh’s novel of escalating shock and suspense.
When Sheriff Bree Taggert discovers the body of a young woman floating near the bank of the Scarlet River, a note in her abandoned car suggests suicide. The autopsy reveals a different story. Holly Thorpe was dead long before she dropped off the bridge and hit the water.
As Bree and her investigator Matt Flynn delve into the case, secrets in Holly’s personal life complicate their efforts to solve the murder. Holly left behind a volatile marriage, an equally divisive relationship with her sister, and an employer whose intimate involvement with Holly was no secret. Each one has a motive for murder.
When Holly’s sister is terrorized by a stalker’s sick prank, and the prime suspect turns up dead, everything Bree was sure of is upended and her case goes off the rails. When the killer strikes close to home, Bree and Matt must race to solve the murders before one of their own becomes the next victim.

The book's told from both Bree and Matt's points of view again, each with an alternate chapter. There's also a few chapters told from Cady's (Matt's sister - the dog rescuer) perspective and a bit more is revealed about her past as she's placed into the story line. One of the things I really love about this series is how well the secondary characters slot naturally into the story without feeling forced. Bree's recent transition to sheriff and guardian continues to smooth itself out and the addition of her family and friends to the story has been well-written and gives the plot a certain amount of warmth that's done really smoothly in Book Three. The children continue to grieve and Bree struggles with the challenge of parenting as well as running a police department where she's still confronted by the daily rigmarole of trying to please others and be somewhat of a politician to keep the station running smoothly. Trying to secure funding, juggling with the press and dealing with confrontational and hostile staff are small sidelines in the story that make the plot believable.
The relationship between Bree and Matt continues to be a slow burn but there's a bit more of an emphasis on it moving in a positive direction in this book. It's still not the main story line, but it's there and for those like myself that enjoy romantic suspense, it was pretty satisfying to see small steps taken forward. There's a quick crossover with the Morgan Dane series again with both Lance and Morgan making a brief appearance (you don't need to have read the aforementioned series but for fans, it's a nice check-in).
Overall, this was a great, satisfying read that hooked me in until the end. The book kept a great pace with plenty happening without being over the top and the who dunnit had a terrific twist that ensured I stayed up until I'd finished the book. I already can't wait for the next one. And who doesn't love a series where a former K-9 unit doggo takes centre stage with other rescue pups. What good boyos :)
One thing I noticed about this book is that Leigh did not include any 3rd-person limited point-of-view chapters from the perspective of the murderer. No complaints here, as I suppose Leigh did so because she felt it might have been too easy for us readers to guess who the culprit was in this instance. And given who the culprit actually was, I understand why Leigh made that decision and think it was smart to help preserve the mystery.
A few days later, Holly's boss, Paul is murdered. Bree and Matt consider a link between the two deaths. Paul is embroiled in a nasty divorce with his wife, Angela. Were the two having an affair and that's why they were killed?
Cady, Matt's sister, goes missing. Matt and Bree search for her. Meanwhile, Dana finds something interesting in Paul's business financials. This provides the murder connection Bree and Matt were looking for. Cady's disappearance leads Bree and Matt to the person who committed the murders of Holly and Paul.
Looking forward to reading the next installment. I don't like spoilers, so none will be found in this review.
Awesome characters, with a climatic, unbelievable conclusion! Once again showing greed, envy, and money are the root of all evil.

It bounced along quite well, but was slightly predictable.
It is one of a series, and they are best read in order, as stand alone you would miss the multi layered back story of Bree and others in the novel.
I am hoping this book is a bridge to the next one, and that one is as good as the previous books.
This one may have been written during the pandemic, I can't imagine trying to write when the world has tipped sideways, it cannot be easy, and I admire any author who sw the process through
Can’t wait to read the next one.....
This book will have you guessing at the turning of each page to 'whodunnit'?
I can't praise this author enough. Looking forward to the next in the series.
