Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—A sweet story of friendship between a proper hippo and a vivacious duck. One spring day, Duck knocks at the door and invites Hippo to take a walk in the rain. With very little convincing from Duck, tentative Hippo dons his yellow rubber wellies and bow tie, and once they figure out how to share an umbrella, they begin their adventures. They have a grand time walking, jumping, and splashing. They even figure out, through trial and error, how to sail down the creek in the umbrella. When they sink in the pond, Duck has a moment of panic while looking for his friend in the water. No worries. They both regain their soggy footing until Duck is carried away by a strong wind. All's well that ends well, and they make it back to Hippo's house just as the sun comes out. Though the book is a tad wordy, the large cartoon art is lively and engaging. VERDICT This unlikely duo show that friendship comes in all shapes and sizes and pals are there for each other through thick and thin. Sure to be a storytime staple.—Gwen Collier, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, NY

“A sweet story of friendship between a proper hippo and a vivacious duck...This unlikely duo show that friendship comes in all shapes and sizes and pals are there for each other through thick and thin. Sure to be a storytime staple.” School Library Journal

“Playful type and wordplay add to the amusement. Children are unlikely to feel any anxiety as these friends bumble along in the dark, so calm and good-hearted is the story. Friendship stories are plentiful, and outdoor adventures are not unusual, but this lively lark is a picnic basket full of fun.” Kirkus Reviews

I was raised a Navy Brat and moved every two or three years when I was growing up. Now I live in one place and travel to lots of other places. I started writing poems in college, got a M.A. in History, performed in a modern dance company, traveled the world, got married, had two sons, and when I started telling my boys, Aaron and Sean, stories I realized that I could write for children. My first two books came out in the same week, in 1992, THIRTEEN MOONS ON TURTLE'S BACK and THE LION WHO HAD ASTHMA, soon followed by FROGGY GETS DRESSED. These books are still in print. FROGGY GETS DRESSED was the first of over twenty-eight Froggy books. The most recent one is FROGGY'S LEMONADE STAND (May 15, 2018) FROGGY

PICKS A PUMPKIN and FROGGY BUILDS A SNOWMAN will follow in 2019. Then FROGGY FOR PRESIDENT! will be published early in 2020.

My Froggy books are funny and kids love them. But I also write other kinds of books, including wildlife books: HIPPOS ARE HUGE! OTTERS LOVE TO PLAY! (river otters). And more recently: PUP THE SEA OTTER (illustrated by my son Sean London). PUP THE SEA OTTER won the 2017 NATIONAL OUTDOOR BOOK AWARD (NOBA), the 2017 National Science Teacher's Association Outstanding Children's Trade Book Award, and the 2018 ILA/CBC Children's Choice Award

My most recent wildlife book is LITTLE FOX IN THE SNOW (NOV. 13 2018), featured in

the Wall Street Journal Seasons Greetings children's book section.

I've also written a middle grade novel trilogy: Aaron's Wilderness Trilogy: DESOLATION CANYON, BELLA BELLA, and GRIZZLY PEAK, all illustrated by my son, Sean London, who is an animator.

I started a new picture book series with DUCK AND HIPPO IN THE RAINSTORM, followed

by DUCK AND HIPPO LOST AND FOUND. DUCK AND HIPPO GIVE THANKS came out on 8/20/18, to be followed by DUCK AND HIPPO THE SECRET VALENTINE Dec. 18 2018. I've published over 120 books since 1992, but now I only write poems for myself. My sons and my wife, Maureen, are my constant inspirations. But I'm also inspired by young children, dogs, mountains, rivers, stars, trees, great cities, deserts, jungles, great food, dance, art, some sports, and the moon. And if anybody asks, Froggy c'est moi--but he's also Aaron and Sean, and every kid I've ever met. Flop flop flop!

5.0 out of 5 stars My 4-yr-old loved it.
By Tammy on February 1, 2017
I always get excited when I see that my Kindle First selections include a children's book option because I know it's going to get read right away and most likely often. When I saw that it was by the same author as the Froggy series, I knew it was a winner. My four year old is super active and books are the only thing she will sit still for. So she was happy to take a break from playing this morning for a quick new story and she enjoyed this one.

This is a cute story about friendship, teamwork, compromise, adventure, and trial and error. It has great illustrations and is an easy, fun read. We of course had to give each character an accent...Hippo has a deep slow voice kind of like Eeyore and Duck has a high pitch, annoying, slightly nasal voice. My little one said her very favorite part was when Duck flew away because that would be fun to do. She immediately asked to read it again and what happened next...the telltale signs that a children's book has done its job well. I hope to see more adventures from Hippo and Duck.

I downloaded on the Kindle for iPad app onto my iPad Air and it was well formatted. I do suggest reading with your iPad in the portrait position rather than the landscape position simply because you get a bigger page that fills the entire screen. Also, FYI, the print is nicely sized but you can double tap on the words for bigger letters. I will include a few screen shots for reference.
