Derek Brighton has become one of Dallas’s finest detectives through a combination of discipline and obsession. Once he has a target in his sights, nothing can stop him. When he isn’t solving homicides, he applies the same intensity to his playtime at Sanctum, a secretive BDSM club. Karina Mills has a reputation for being reckless, and her clients appreciate her results. As a private investigator, she pursues her cases with nothing holding her back. In her personal life, Karina yearns for something different. Playing at Sanctum has been a safe way to find peace, but the one Dom who could truly master her heart is out of reach.
On the hunt for a killer, Derek enters a shadowy underworld only to find the woman he aches for is working the same case. Karina is searching for a missing girl and won’t stop until she finds her. Derek is detective and wants the perfect 24/7 sub. His first marriage didn’t end well and now he has a specific idea of what he wants…and it’s not Karina. Don’t get me wrong, he wants her bad, but he thinks she’s not sub material, especially since she seems to have a relationship with the other Doms in the club.
Karina is reckless but has a heart of gold. She’s a wonderful character but doesn’t show her world to many people. Derek is only going by what he sees and doesn’t know the whole truth about Karina. But when a serial killer goes after Karina it’s up to Derek to protect her and he must do that by being her Dom.
These two have some fierce chemistry and I loved everything about their story! One of my favorites in the series!
The victim was immobilized by Shibari knots. Someone knows about Derek's proclivities and needs his expertise. The Dallas PD and the Texas Rangers have asked for McKay-Taggart before the FBI comes in and shoves them all out. Okay, so he's not being fired. Whew. But his ex wife had outed him. The killer leaves a grain of rice in the corpse's hair naming his next victim. This time it's Karina the lippy messy cop who is Derek's nemesis. Her reaction? She jumps up with a gleeful fist pump, "Yesss!" One of her friends was a victim and this case is personal. Neither Karina nor Derek trust easily so things will be rocky as he moves in with her to help set up their trap. They will pose as a D/s couple. We like them. But stomachs still 'roll' not 'roil.' Ah Lexi, don't your fans write?
Even with the best laid plans, Karina does get in a dangerous situation but she has trust that Derek will search for her. There were some new characters that we meet and I loved how Karina handled Maia.
Derek and Karina have intrigued me for a long time, and I was eager to see when they would get their chance to be front and center. I wasn’t disappointed. Their scenes are fraught with tension but their connection was apparent from the start.
The dialogue flowed well, with good humor and showcased the relationships that have been established between all the characters.
The smexy times - yeah, Ms. Blake has never had a problem with that, and she certainly comes through with Derek and Karina. There’s a good balance between the sex and the emotional scenes, and it doesn’t overwhelm.
The Just Ok
The “mystery” of who the killer is, really isn’t. But if I want a mystery, I’ll go read Agatha Christie.
I don’t think it functions well as a standalone. I could easily see it becoming confusing for someone unfamiliar with the ‘verse and all its players to follow the action since there are appearances from many former heroes/heroines.
This also affects the believability of the HEA - I’ve read this series from the beginning and I know there’s a history between Derek and Karina but if I wasn’t, the condensed timeline works against this.
The Bottom Line
As a fan of this series, I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend to those already familiar with this ‘verse. If you’re not, I wouldn’t think this is the place to start.

Derek Brighton is a cop with DPD (Dallas Police Department), he is called in to help the Rangers with a case because the murder victims have all be subs playing at local club and their bodies have been found tied in intricate bondage. Some of the Mckay/Taggart team are called in as is Karina Mills, P.I. He and Karina know each other from Sanctum and try to avoid each other as much as possible but now they have to fake a D/s relationship to lure the murderer in. Derek makes assumptions about Karina based on his cheating wife and scared of his judgement, Karina hides the secrets of her past from him.
This is a great short story but I question the need for it and the other novellas as they do not add to the running storyline through the series.
