Delightful and hilarious! Having been a fan of Gerald (the youngest son obsessed with fauna) Durrell's writings from the first time I read them in the '90s, this first season has captured his descriptions of his unconvention family in the highly fictionalized accounts of their time in Corfu. Lawrence ( the oldest son, a writer obsessed with sex) wrote the "Alexandria Quartet" which is considered by many to be a masterpiece.
Gerald Durrell the naturalist, became an author, conservationist, TV presenter, and founded the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust (1963) and Durrell Wildlife Park (1959) on the Channel Island of Jersey (United Kingdom) off the coast of Normandy, France. His books are some of my all time favorites because of their humor and obvious love of nature which I share. He claims in one of his writings that "zoo" was his first word! Durrell with his 2nd wife, Lee along with David Attenborough, et al, helped launch the World Land Trust (1989) starting conservation in multiple countries though its initial goal was to save rainforest in Belize.
All the Durrell children were born in India because their father was an engineer who worked for the Crown. They moved to Britain when their father died. As shown in the premiere of this series, they moved to Corfu shortly after. Both Gerald and Lawrence wrote books about their time there.
As delightful as this series is, my enjoyment certainly was greatly influenced by the fact that I was already a (Gerald) Durrell bookclub fan! Watching this was like reading some of his books all over again.
