5.0 out of 5 starsEscort Max 360 vs Escort Redline - A Heavy Driver's Comparison
Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2017
This is a short word on this radar detector and why I think it's one of the best you can get.

I have 2 primary vehicles that I drive- one of them is equipped with the Escort Redline and one is equipped with this Escort Max 360. My vehicle with the Escort Redline used to have the Valentine 1, but I liked the Redline more so I upgraded. The Escort Redline is a great radar detector and was the benchmark that I compared all other radar detectors to. So if you can't tell, I really like the Escort Redline- but the Max 360 has since dethroned it as my favorite radar detector of all time.

1) Directional Notification- the Max 360 tells me where the radar signal is coming from. If I'm crushing down the interstate and I am approaching an on-ramp and the Max 360 tells me a radar signal is coming from the right, I know to slow down immediately. If I'm on a stretch of road and the radar alert comes from the rear, I know I have more time to slow down if the nearest car is way back or I've just topped a hill. The directional warning is supremely helpful in knowing how quickly to slow down or if you need to slow down at all- you don't realize how useful it is until you use it. Directional identification is absent on the Redline and much more inaccurate on the Valentine 1.

2) GPS Memory- the Max 360 knows when the radar goes off in the same spot every day and can smartly identify stores and gas stations that set it off. The 4th time I passed a Publix that always sets radar detectors off due to the motion sensing doors, a subtle beep sounded with the word "Stored" on the screen. The radar has never gone off in front of this Publix again. A few weeks later a cop had radar set up in front of this same Publix. The Max 360 went off and I thought it was picking up the store again until I got closer and saw the cop car. So it's smart enough to learn locations but not miss a new radar signature in a previously stored area- no idea how it does that.

3) Antennas- the Max 360 has MUCH better rear and side detection than the Redline. Not even a contest. The Redline might have a slightly longer front detection (10-15% it seems) but the Max 360 mops the floor with the Redline from the rear and sides- I'd say double the detection range if not more. The detection range from all sides with the Max 360 provides more than ample time to stop- with the Redline, that's only the case with the front detection.

4) Displayed Information- the Max 360 has a much nicer display than the Redline, with animated pulsating marks, and it matches most car instrument gauges much better. The Max 360 also shows your current speed, which it uses GPS to calculate. It's spot-on with my speedometer and it has never lost GPS signal. Due to the Max 360 having an actual LCD panel, the settings are easier to navigate and setup. The Redline doesn't show any useful information except what radar band is detected.

5) Sound- the Max 360 alert sounds are leaps beyond the Redline. The voice is a higher clarity, the alarms are not as harsh-sounding, and the auto-muting/volume reduction feature works WAY better.

6) General Aesthetics- the Max 360 simply looks better than the Redline in my opinion. It is slightly larger but the finish seems to be higher quality, the improved LCD display looks MUCH better, and the design simply melds with the interior of most cars better.

7) False Warnings- the Max 360 RARELY gives false warnings and when it does, it learns to not repeat them over time. As in my above Publix example, my Redline still goes off to this day in front of Publix while the Max 360 does not. I can't tell you how many times the Redline is set off by radar-based cruise control systems on the interstate while the Max 360 isn't phased by them. Redline gives probably 75% more false warnings than the Max 360, and that's likely a conservative number.

I considered the Escort Redline one of the best radar detectors on the market for many years- and it still is, just not as good as the Max 360. After extensive use of both (around 100,000 miles with the Redline and about 80,000 with the Max 360) I'm confident in the accuracy of my comparison between the two- however, keep in mind that I've done no scientific studies on either, I've just used them as a heavy driver would. The only area where the Redline slightly beats the Max 360 is in frontal detection range but in all other categories, the Max 360 is the best product Escort currently offers.

I've just ordered a second Max 360 for my vehicle with the Redline in it and I look forward to its arrival.

3.0 out of 5 starsWe collect personally-identifiable information and may share the information we collect.
Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2016
I recently reviewed the Beltronics GT-7 Radar Detector, which is basically identical to this device. Here are the differences:
1. Directional arrows on the right side that show where the radar is originating in relation to your car. I actually found this feature to be quite useful while driving and making braking/acceleration decisions.
2. You can turn off the "over speed" alarm and can now set it all the up to 160 (limit of 99 on the Beltronics and you could not turn it off).
3. The enclosure is aesthetically different, it's darker and more pleasing to the eye.

Ok, here's the kick in the pants that brought my Beltronics review to 3 stars... Escort is taking a value-subtraction business model by removing core functionality of the device. This is an attempt to get you to subscribe to the Escort Live service for a monthly fee and to also collect a database on you that can be sold to third. This includes your name, you email address, your driving record, the physical locations, and how much you like to speed. Hmmm, what third parties would be interested in such information?

Ok, so I'll be the guinea pig this time around and sign up for the service. I drive a 2009 Corvette and have an Escort Redline (5 stars, by the way) installed. Now I have the Max 360 beside it and I'm ready to attach this thing to my smart phone. Here we go.

I download the app from the Google store. It wants a series of privileges including in-app purchases and my personal identification. I grant it, install it, and open it.

First screen is the terms of service with some really small text that quickly scrolls down the screen and a giant red button that says "I ACCEPT". Not so fast, I'll read it all. Here's the highlights directly quoted from what I am about to agree to:

* “You agree and warrant that all information you provide to Escort as part of the registration process... is truthful and accurate.”
* “By creating an Account, you consent to Escort’s collection and use of personal information and location-based data as discussed in Escort’s Privacy Policy.”
* “From time to time, we may use your information for new, unanticipated uses not previously disclosed in our Policy.”
* “We collect both personal information and location based data in connection with your use of the Escort App and the Services.”
* “We collect personally-identifiable information”
* “We collect certain information (“Data”) from you… Data includes GPS location information, unique device identifiers, user account identifiers, as well as location and time information (heading, street name, time stamp) related to any alerts generated automatically”
* “We may share the information we collect… with third parties, who may use the information for their own marketing purposes.”
* “We use the information collected from you to compile a database”
* “We may retain Personal Information you provide to us indefinitely. In addition, any Data we collect is retained in our database indefinitely”

Sounds like a great deal right? You pay Escort a monthly fee of $4.99 in order to unlock the speed limit display on your device (a feature that GPS units have enjoyed without a smart phone for over a decade) and in return they collect an unbelievable amount of personal information and sell it whoever the please. Man, if I was an insurance company or law enforcement agent I would enjoy sifting through that database... in fact, I would probably pay for the privilege.

The app also drains the battery on my Sony Xperia smart phone faster than any app I've seen. It's constantly "scanning for alerts" even when you leave your vehicle. You will have to use some other method to kill the process also because there is no manual exit button in the app itself.

I just don't want to have to use my smartphone with my radar detector. Let's face it... I'm speeding and don't want a ticket. My eyes are on the road, I'm scanning the horizon for dangers, my hands are on the steering wheel. I need a device that will let me know when to brake and I need it to give me accurate and fast information without me having to take my eyes off the road. The Max 360 is not that device... it's an "Internet of Things", it's a data collector, it's a social media interface... but it's not the best radar detector for a driver of a fast car.

This radar detector works really well so far, I deff. Recommend buying the power/ground wire that connects to the back of the rear view mirror for the much cleaner look myself. Instead of a wire hanging over the dashboard. And also recommend buying the rear view mirror mount for a super clean/custom type look. Check out the pics below and see for yourself!

Had an escort from 2007 so got a new one. Knowing the quality of the brand before I bought was a huge factor. With police radars you really pay for what you get. Was driving on the parkway with my brother, was driving a tad bit fast in left lane. Got a signal it was 1 or 2 beeps with the arrow pointing foward. Slowed down a bit to speed limit while being cautious. About 1 min later the cop is on the side of the road checking speeds. SUPER USEFUL. Will not only save you money in tickets but will save you money eventually on car insurance. Def cop this jawn

I love this thing. Paired with Waze, it works wonders. It picks up CHP's KA band radar well in advance. Often times, the detector will start buzzing like crazy a few seconds before Waze alerts me to police ahead. I have encountered hidden KA band traps a number of times since I bought this, and I was well prepared every time.

The mount is really easy to use, and keeps the detector firmly in place while driving. I really don't have any complaints about this at all. It is worth the money.

was happy with radar detector - live in California.. bought in July and it overheated and died in September. Called Escort, but they hang up before I leave a call back number.. que is full - not response - no customer service... I called Amazon and they tried to contact Escort to no avail. Looking to return or replace. Tried the factory reset.. did not work. thought it blew a fuse, but does not work in any of our 3 cars.

1/2022 UPDATE: Amazon stood behind the purchase - returned and bought the same thing. It has been running great since then. I added the newer #2 mini camera and both have worked great. I thought the directional arrows were more of a sales thing... but they really do work and now I always check where the radar is coming from.. I am very happy with this detector... very few false.. excellent at KA radar. I hope it last through next summer. I don't like taking it in and out, my last Escort camera wire broke and is why I had to replace it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great & Accurate Product for the price.

Bought this for our new car. Have had an older Uniden Radar Detector that we were moving between two vehicles for road trips. The older detector I have was manufactured before all the new "Smart Collision Avoidance & Lane Departure Detection's" and "Adaptive Cruise Control" features that are found on new cars.

With my old model, whenever a newer vehicle that had these new functions that are Radar driven instead of Photocell driven (such as Hyundai vehicles), and would trigger false positives.

This model hasn't set off one false positive on any of our road-trips, or even "around-the-town" situations.

The option to know which way the radar is coming from has helped TREMENDOUSLY on a couple road-trips to Southern California.

Definitely recommend, and will be purchasing another one of these for our other vehicle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the extra price vs. the Escort Passport 9500ix
Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2019
Pattern Name: DetectorVerified Purchase
I used to own the Escort Passport 9500ix, which was a few hundred dollars cheaper than this one. After my other one was stolen, I really debated whether it was worth it to spend so much to replace it with the Max 360. I ended up doing it, and I'm glad I did. The aspects that make it so much better:

1. The alert noises. The noises on this one sound like more of a gentle train horn. Still attention-catching, but the Escort Passport 9500ix high-pitched beeping was very irritating in comparison.

2. The arrows. This was the number one reason I upgraded, and I'm happy to report they seem to be pretty reliable. It makes a BIG difference to know whether the signal is coming from ahead or behind, and in my experience it's been accurate so far.

3. The mount. This one stays on better and is easier to connect the device to.

I don't use mine on a day-to-day basis but rather on drives of 2 hours or more, but it's definitely caught some hidden cops multiple times during usage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great detector
Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2018
Pattern Name: DetectorVerified Purchase
I spent a lot of time making a decision on which of the top detectors I would buy. The R3 is very sensitive with long range detection but has no direction indicators or automatic GPS/frequency based blocking of repeated false signals. The newer Max 360C has Wifi which allows for auto update of firmware when you have a wifi signal, but firmware updates come out maybe 2-3 times a year? Not worth the extra $200 for me. I chose the Max 360. The large suction cup mount is solid and I like the magnetic mount to the detector. I bought a mirror tap cable, the 15 inch model, for by BMW, that was easy to install and very nice not to have a cable stretched to the unit.
Filtering of false signals from collision avoidance systems is very good, rarely get one. It is great to hear the beep when the unit has recognized the same false signal in the same place 3 times and blocks future noise. The directional indicators have been very nice on several occasions. The Bluetooth connection to the Escort live app actually gave me a early heads up of a Ka band detection by another user and it likely saved me. It was hard to swallow the cost of a top end detector but if you want to be able to trust alerts, cheaper options just don't work in todays noisy RF environment.

My last detector was a Wisper from 1980s. What an improvement. Used this on a recent 1400 mile vacation on the East coast. Surprised the unit notified me of photo stop-light and speed cameras. Not too obtrusive but gets the job done. Thing paid for itself on just this one trip. Hope to also use it on my motorbike. I didn't like mounting the unit up by the rearview mirror with it's dangling power cord so I placed it on the high point of the dash, centered on the steering wheel (bean-bag mount with big rubber band). I added a dark paper shield on the top to reduce glare from the top of the unit. A forward facing camera is available for the unit but seems a bit expensive to me. May get one if I can mount this on my motor bike.
