You either have to get a tiny screw driver on that screw at a steep angle with the shroud on, or remove the shroud by removing the 7 or 8 screws that hold the fan on! (no, the cosmetic hunk of plastic doesn't just snap off). I didn't want to remove the fan as that would probably remove the heat sync requiring more heat transfer paste, etc. If they needed that extra support (as no other adapter on earth ever has) they could have afixed a thread to the face of the board and screwed the bracket on from the OUTSIDE!
I've owned probably a dozen EVGA graphics adapters, and have always thought of it as a go-to brand, so this Varsity-level stupidity really caught me off guard.
There are NO instructions covering any of this in the box, on the box, or on the included (generic) driver disc.
Given that the GPU is passively cooled I was very curious to see how it would perform thermally. While periodically checking temps in windows outside of games it was typically around 42-43C. For gaming thermals I ran it through it's paces in Unigine and a few games monitoring the GPU temps & clocks via MSI afterburner using complete factory default settings. Basically until the GPU hits ~83C the GPU core clock stays around 1.7GHz. Upon hitting ~83C it will begin to throttle the GPU clock down to around 1.5-1.6GHz and stay in that range while fluctuating from about 81-83C. Memory clock was pegged at 3GHz and never moved.
Anecdotal game experiences:
World of Warcraft: At settings 5 and foreground FPS cap set to 66 it held 60+ in most zones while I was testing. In the Auction house and Uldir 45-50 FPS seemed to be the norm. Completely playable.
Overwatch: On High at 1080p with render scale set to 100% ~45-50FPS seemed to be the average. On Medium with auto render scale it stayed pegged at 60+
In any event for a passively cooled GPU for a budget SFF HTPC this is more than I could have hoped for.

Only gripe I had with it is when I tried to fit it into my sff case which meant I had to exchange the io bracket on the GPU to a smaller one(included) the problem is that the fan and overall cover plate blocks the one screw needed to remove the plate. It's do-able to remove the screw but when you have to replace it you have to remove the cover plate and fan to be able to screw the back plate in place. I just left the screw as it doesnt really affect the overall structure and I didn't want to remove the fan and cover plate as I'd have to apply thermal paste when putting everything back together.
But, I saw EVGA's Superclocked Edition of the decent GT 1030. I wasn't expecting 1080p120fps, but it certainly reaches 1080p90fps in medium settings for most games. This GT 1030 can be overclocked to get even more out of it, this card isn't even designed for gaming, it's supposed to be for HTPCs and Blu-Ray 4K. I was surprised to see that I reached out to 60fps gaming on this low end GPU.
If you don't plan on heavy gaming, this item makes a very good compromise for playing cinematically at around 40fps in 1080p on high settings. If you do want to sweat, get a GTX 1050 or wait for Geforce 11.
