Editorial Reviews

Review

“This is a zany adventure with vivid cartoon characters and a multitude of jokes on every page. Perhaps there will be more adventures for the Elite Sheep. The premise is a promise of more to come.” —New York Journal of Books

“I love a good fractured fairy tale, and Eduardo Guadardo fits the bill!” Mom Read It

“The story offers a life lesson even for the youngest of readers.” Sincerely Stacie

“Original, creative, and such fun!” Mrs. Mommy Booknerd’s Book Reviews

“Quirky, silly, and hilariously clever…Parents and teachers will get a kick out of this story.” Kristi’s Book Nook

“What a fun and quite smart idea! I didn’t know that I ever wondered how Mary got her lamb, but this backstory is one epic way for that nursery rhyme to come about!” Unleashing Readers

From the Publisher

You may know that Mary had a little lamb whose fleece was white as snow. But did you know how Mary ended up with that lamb—or that he was a secret agent? You see, everything is not as it seems in the land of nursery rhymes and fairy tales.

Eduardo Guadardo is about to graduate from the FBI—the Fairy-Tale Bureau of Investigations, that is—as an Elite Sheep. So when he’s assigned to protect Mary, who he thinks is the daughter of the wealthiest farmer in the land, from bad guys, Eduardo knows they chose the best agent. It’s a job for someone baaaaadd, after all. And he doesn’t need any help...or does he?

While there’s a great message about teamwork here, this new spin on a beloved childhood song is best described as just plain fun. Spy jargon, action, and loads of humor will keep kids turning the pages...and you will never listen to the song the same way again!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Cute Story with a Valuable Lesson but the Presentation is Mediocre
By Kristin B. on September 1, 2018
Every month, I get excited for the new First Reads selections and lately, I've loved the fact that there have been books for children offered! I have five-and-a-half year old twins and they are good test subjects so I can use their reactions and opinions in my reviews. When I saw a children's book in the selections for September, I immediately downloaded it and read it to my twins before breakfast.

Eduardo Guardardo, Elite Sheep is a picture book story about a sheep who is about to graduate from the FBI (Fairy-Tale Bureau of Investigations). His goal is to be an Elite Sheep and he has a plan of how to accomplish it. Unfortunately, his plans don't quite align with the FBI's goals and he will learn a lesson or two in this book.

This book is about 40 pages long with colorful illustrations. There are a number of fairytale creatures in the story which are cute to point out to kids. I would say this story is geared towards children ages four to seven, although younger and older kids may enjoy it as well.

My twins had mixed reviews of this book. My son liked it and paid attention to most of the story. My daughter had little interest in it and actually started looking at a different book in the middle of this book. She kept asking when it would be done. She told me she didn't like it.

From my point of view, I feel it is just okay. I liked the cute story and illustrations. Like all of the Fancy Nancy books, there are some bigger words used and then they are explained in words children will most likely understand. I also liked the lesson that Eduardo learns at the end. On the other side, I feel this story is too jumbled and it doesn't flow nicely. I've read a lot of children's books to my kids and our favorites either rhyme or flow nicely. I feel like this story is all over the place and won't keep kids focused. Some of the pages are fine but many of them are too busy and need to be explained otherwise kids won't understand the story.

Overall, we feel this story is just okay. I feel it has potential to be good because of the cute story and lessons learned but the presentation doesn't work well. It's too jumbled and doesn't flow well at all. I highly doubt we will read this much. I feel bad criticizing an author's work like this because I know he worked hard on it but I have to be honest with my opinions. I don't regret downloading this book because it was free but I sadly can't say that I would pay for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great message, fun characters and illustrations...would be better in a different format.
By Tammy on September 1, 2018
I am not a professional book reviewer but I have reviewed a few children’s books here on Amazon and I base my review solely on how my 5-year-old daughter reacts to a story. This is a cute story and a fun idea with an excellent message about teamwork. She enjoyed the characters and the illustrations but the format could have been better. It is in what I call “comic book” style which is very hard to read aloud. Consequently, we had to stop several times to explain things. I think 3-year-old would have a very hard time following the story in this format.
