I am really happy to complete the series so that elephant gets his full face! In my other reviews, this is a good one to get if you are planning to get the whole series and haven't got the only books on their own. This is because the titles aren't new but just compilations of 5 of his books in 1.

I really like Mo Willems because he combines basic reading with simple yet adorable cartoon characters which appeals to young children. The stories are written no simpler than books that kids are using to recognize and begin reading independently such as "you have a bird on your head.", " I have a bird on my head?". I like especially that these books go back to the very basics of using words like "i have" vs "I've" where the latter confuses kids trying to recognize basic common words and is common in books these days. If you are truly looking to get your toddler and kindergartener started, look no further.

We preordered the book and the brand new book arrived damaged. The binding is messed up. Check your books when you get them. It could be a bad batch or ours could be an anomaly. We'll see what the replacement looks like as we have been eagerly waiting for this volume because we love Mo Willems.

BIG collection of several Elephant and Piggie stories

The Elephant and Piggie stories, by Mo Willems, are modern classics. I worked for many years as a children's librarian, and I refer to the series as the gateway drug to literacy. I purchased the three volumes (each with five of the original stories) for our roofer to give to his young children. While it is convenient to have five books in one sturdy volume, each one is very thick and heavy, and might be hard for small hands to hold, or intimidating for reluctant readers (although Elephant and Piggie do encourage them, along the way, which is fun). Five stars, definitely, for this superb series, but consider purchasing the original, separate copies for young readers, in classic "beginning reader" size, instead of the thick collections (the size and heft is why I gave these 4 stars).

We have always loved anything Mo Willems wants to write, but the Piggy and Gerald books are extra special. Knowing how much my son enjoyed having them read to him -very loud and dramatically!- I thought reading through these would encourage him to venture more into self-directed reading. And it did!

He would excitedly open the book when it arrived and begin attempting to read the stories on his own and often out loud to his younger sister. I made a deal with him that I would order the next Volume in the series once he read through each story with me listening. This latest one, he was so confident he sat down and read the whole thing to me in one sitting, loving and laughing through every minute of it.

As my kids have learned to read these have always been an instant favorite. They read them again and again and they are so funny I don’t mind reading them either. I never have to pull teeth to get reading time in with these. My only problem is that they are nearly all memorized. I wish there were more. I introduced them when my kids were 4- but didn’t give them a collection until they were trying to read on their own. 5-6. My 10 year old still gets nostalgic for them ever now and then.

The illustrations are simple but fun, the characters are endearing and the text is simple enough for beginning readers. My kids love these books. This collection comes in hardcover and a sturdy binding. We will be getting the rest of the books in this series as well.

The kids also love looking for the hidden pigeons throughout these stories.

Love, love, love the book. However the book came damaged. It’s just for my daughter and I don’t want to go through the hassle of going to a return site during the pandemic. Kind of disappointed with how they are packed by Amazon but the book is great. My five year old has read all the stories before bed time and it’s over 300 pages long.
