About Elisabeth Waters
Elisabeth Waters sold her first short story in 1980 to Marion Zimmer Bradley for THE KEEPER'S PRICE, the first of the Darkover anthologies. She then went on to sell dozens of short stories to a variety of anthologies. Her first novel, a fantasy called CHANGING FATE, was awarded the 1989 Gryphon Award. MENDING FATE is the sequel to it. Elisabeth also writes short stories, and she currently edits the SWORD AND SORCERESS anthologies.
She has also worked as a supernumerary with the San Francisco Opera, where she appeared in La Gioconda, Manon Lescaut, Madama Butterfly, Khovanschina, Das Rheingold, Werther, and Idomeneo.

Blog postIt's that time of year again: the publication of the annual Valdemar anthology, and my annual animal story. This year it's called "A Siege of Cranes." Lena, my protagonist with Animal MindSpeech, prefers animals to most people, probably because she finds animals easier to talk to. She is stuck at Court, however, because she is no longer able to persuade her guardian, who also happens to be the King of Valdemar, that she's too young to participate in the social season. She is surrounded2 years ago Read more

Blog postI have no idea where the time went, but I just realized that I need to approve the page proofs (which have been ready for over a month) next Friday in order to publish the paperback version of Sword and Sorceress 33. The pre-orders for ePub and Kindle have been up for a while now, but Amazon (which swallowed CreateSpace during our production process, making things even more complicated) still doesn't allow pre-orders for physical books. I'm hoping they will soon. Deborah J. Ross and I2 years ago Read more

Blog postIt's September and I'm pretty much finished with the pre-orders for Sword and Sorceress 32. When it's published on November 2, 2017, it will be available in trade paperback and possibly a few more eBook formats, but at the moment it's available for iBook, Kindle, Kobo, and Nook.

Blog postDuring my first quarter in college, I had a teacher who frequently used two acronyms: RTB (Read The Book) and RTQ (Read The Question). If you do both of these, your grades will be much better. Reading the question carefully also helps with games like Trivia Crack. Conversely, playing Trivia Crack will help you do better on multiple choice tests, because it helps you develop strategies for making better guesses when you don't know the answer.
Of course, RTQ is not a new idea. It was4 years ago Read more -
Blog postThis is the eleventh of the Treasures of Albion stories, and it begins with April, the first assistant registrar at the University of Albion, having such a bad day that when local law enforcement shows up, it's actually a nice change:"Is black magic customarily set to music?"
It said something about April’s morning that this question was actually refreshing as well as bizarre.Of course, April now has to explain that what they have is not a death threat:"'I will incline mine4 years ago Read more -
Blog post"A Wake of Vultures" is the fourth story in my mini-series of stories in Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar anthologies about people with Animal Mindspeech. Lena, the protagonist of this story, first appeared in "A Charm of Finches" (published in 2010) as a ten-year-old orphan being fostered at the Temple of Thenoth, Lord of the Beasts. The next year I wrote "A Leash of Greyhounds" where Lena is sent off to spend the summer with a friend of her late mother.

Blog postThe idea for this story, which appeared in Stars of Darkover, the first of the Darkover anthologies edited by Deborah J. Ross, wasn't really mine. Ann Sharp, my collaborator, had been threatening to write this back when MZB was still editing Darkover anthologies, but she had never quite gotten around to it. So the idea was hers. I agreed that it was a good gimmick, and we sat down to write it together. That was when we discovered that Ann's decades writing reports for her job in an engineering4 years ago Read more

Blog postThis is the tenth story in the Treasures of Albion series that Michael Spence and I write together, and it originally appeared in Sword and Sorceress 28. The inspiration for this story was a combination of two things: (1) Psalm 60, verse 3 "Thou hast showed thy people heavy things; * thou hast given us a drink of deadly wine"; and (2) a museum exhibit.

Blog postAs I mentioned in my last post, I am going back and filling in the answers to "where did you get the idea for this story?" that I missed during my hiatus from blog writing. "They That Watch" is the 9th story in the Treasures of Albion series that Michael Spence and I have been collaborating on since 1999. Most of them have been published in various volumes of Sword and Sorceress; this one was in Sword and Sorceress 27.

Blog postI originally started this blog to answer the question "where do you get your ideas?" Since the answer tends to be different for each story, I did an entry for each one I wrote. Then life interfered, and I pretty much stopped writing this blog. I'm picking it up again with my most recently published story, "A Trip of Goats," which was published December 6, 2016 in Misty Lackey's Valdemar anthology, Tempest.

Blog postI have been looking forward to this film since I saw the first preview. It focuses on three black women working for NASA during the beginning of the Mercury program, and especially on John Glenn's first trip to space. It's ironic that the movie was released the same month John Glenn died. I just saw it, and I loved it. I highly recommend it. I'm also definitely adding the book to my To Read list.

Blog postMENDING FATE is now out in:
paperback, Kindle, Kobo, and Nook formats.
Apparently my subconscious was really looking forward to publishing this, because I woke up at 2:48 am, at which point I grabbed my iPad from the nightstand, connected to the CreateSpace site, and told it I approved the proof (I'm not the publisher, but I am their tech department). I didn't get back to sleep until after 4 am, which always makes me feel like a zombie when I wake up.

Blog postIn Heinlein's novel Stranger in a Strange Land, one of the characters, a Fair Witness, is asked what color a nearby house is painted. I have just received the last author contract for Sword and Sorceress 29. This year the postal service managed to lose two of them, so it took longer than usual. Blog postThe Bible readings for the season are still going through Moses and his leading the Israelites to the promised land. Last Sunday's talk was about how hard it must have been for Moses to have to give up his job to Joshua and to know that he would not enter the new land. ...an incredible blending of fantasy and science fiction.
Eventually the Terrans rediscover their long-lost -- and now alien -- colony: Darkover.
Things are different there.
While adolescent male homosexuality is generally tolerated on Darkover, men are expected to outgrow it. When Dyan Ardais takes lovers young enough to be his sons, he risks not just his reputation, but his life.
Life in a Tower as a Keeper, the chaste virgin who holds a circle together, is grueling. Few succeed in the long, painful years of training. The ones who do have power greater than any queen, but what happens to the ones who don't?
Darkovan technology is based on matrix stones that amplify psychic gifts, and people with those gifts work in the Tower circles. But duty to family outweighs everything else, and anyone can be called home from the Tower to marry as her family dictates. A Comyn lady can have lands, wealth, family...everything but freedom.
Women can become Free Amazons, but that life has its own set of challenges. Before a candidate's trial period ends, she must decide if she is truly meant to cope with everything being a Free Amazon entails.
