I think Wylde and Arthurs do a pretty good job at setting this up in book one. Sometimes I was a little frustrated at not knowing as much as I would like about how their shifters worked, how their world worked, but I think it's important to remember that Nix (MC) is totally new to this world.
Yes, her POV is only one of several that we get, but it's still, principally, HER story, in my humble opinion. It makes sense that we'd be sharing her ignorance. Overall, this really didn't bother me. I've read books where the authors immediately narrate the foundation of world-building and others where we discover it with the characters, like Nix. I don't really have a strict preference on what's better.
The difference "races" within their shifter world as well as the divide between the normal shifters and mythologicals was an interesting take. I think it gives a lot of room for the conflicts to evolve beyond just Nix and her boys. There's a lot of room here for the story to grow as Nix and her guys go against the system that's been in place for so long.
I liked Nix. She's a bit inconsistent, finding her strength/courage in random spurts, but I think that may have something to do with all of the trauma she's experienced. Her life was inconsistent; in and out of foster care, living in moments of peace and fear between her father's abuse...I'd be more surprised if she was a consistently strong character because she's had to deal with so much, virtually alone.
One thing I'll definitely stand by is that we are seeing the tropes that tend to populate a lot of RH books as far as the guys are concerned: a flirt, the "geek", the kinkier one, the care-giver. While it would have been a bit more intriguing to get something different, I can't say that I didn't still enjoy Wylde and Arthurs' characters.
Generally, I liked Born of Embers. I DID feel a little cheated when the book ended on such a cliffhanger (right in the middle of action), but it did its job (I bought the next book).

Definitely 5 stars.

The story and length were halfway decent, the ideas pretty good. It dragged a little in places, but overall flowed nicely. However, the characters were one-dimensional and built of overused clichés. The thing that bugged me the most is that the MC went through some horrific stuff in her past, and yet aside from some token flinches, acts like nothing happened. No PTSD, no depression, nothing. I'm not saying that I WANT them in an MC, but it would have made the character more believable and worth an emotional investment.
There were also some spelling and grammar mistakes, and the thing was riddled with pop culture references which - in my opinion - both dates a story and illustrates lazy writing.
