The Emp Test Kindle Edition
Avain is on his Aud'ling - his coming-of-age test that requires him to spend a couple months alone, away from his own people. When he finds the steader trapped under his aur with a broken leg, he knows he has to help. But not being allowed to speak during his test makes things... difficult.
The two of them will have to come to an understanding if they're not going to kill one another. And Avain has a secret to share with Jey, one that that will change his life forever.

Breaking out of the grass, the headstrong aur smashed right into a tall mud orinth nest, shattering it into a million chunks of dirt and covering Jey with dust. Orange and green insects burst into the air in a cloud all around them, chittering their displeasure—keeyip keeyip keeyip. Jey growled and flattened himself on Critter’s back until they were past the swarm. He spat out dust-turned-mud and hauled back on the reins, but the aur ignored him. Jey clamped down on his own fear and anger. He’d been stupid to take the aur out of the stable on an afternoon like this, mad or not. His anger often got the better of him. His cheek still stung where his father had backhanded him. |
He awoke with a start. Instead of a downpour, a soft but steady rain fell outside, soothing in its pitter-patter. The pain in his leg had lessened. Jey opened his eyes. Where the hell am I? Firelight flickered across the rough cavern ceiling, creating strange twisting shadows, and someone was whistling a melancholy tune. He stared at the rocky ceiling above him for a minute, trying to make sense of things. His head still ached, and his thoughts were as slow as hencha sap. This isn’t home. |
As the days grew steadily shorter, Avain felt a companionship growing between them. He wasn’t sure what Jey was to him, exactly, but he was something more than just a steader. Through his emp, Avain could feel Jey’s slow-simmering anger, especially when he first returned from his hunting trips. Anger at being trapped here, no doubt. At feeling like a caged animal. He could do something about that, something to help Jey feel human again. |

About the author

Scott inhabits the space between the "here and now" and the "what could be". He was shepherded into his love affair with fantasy and sci fi by his mother at the tender age of nine, and soon read her entire library. But as he grew up and read more, he wondered where all the gays were.
He came out as gay at 23, and decided to create the stories he couldn't find at his local bookstore. He reimagined his favorite genres, subverting them and remaking them to his own ends with a universe of diverse characters. And every now and then he hopes someone finds and enjoys them.
His friends say Scott's mind works a little differently - he sees connections between things that many people miss, and accomplishes more in a day than many people do in three.
Scott's fiction subverts expectations and transforms traditional science fiction, fantasy, and contemporary life into something fresh and unexpected. He manages both Queer Sci Fi and QueeRomance Ink with his husband Mark to promote and celebrate fiction that reflects their worldview, and is an associate member of the Science Fiction Writer's Association (SFWA).
He infuses his work with love, beauty and power, making them soar, and hopes they will change the world, just a little.
Scott was recognized as one of the top new gay authors in the 2017 Rainbow Awards, and his debut novel "Skythane" received two awards and an honorable mention.
Scott lives with his husband of 25 years in Sacramento, California, in a small yellow house with two pink flamingoes in front.
