...most of the time, that is. Right now, it looks to be in a bit of trouble, the kind that could basically spell the End of Life As We Know It. Yeah, it's tough when your mostly unknown history catches up with you, it causes problems when you violate treaties that your ancestors didn't bother to tell you about. But our Heroes will overcome - um, that is if they can even figure out how to get started. Another great book of Space Opera from Ms Duboff - you don't really need to read all the previous books as this is the start of a new series (in the same universe) but they are certainly worth reading. Highly recommended for fast paced space adventure including FTL drives, ESP powers, AI enhancements - and romance, intrigue and fun characters!
I’m excited for where this new series goes. For those familiar with the Cadicle series, this book encompasses the full 3 generations of Chris, Wil, and Jason & Raena (including partners and siblings). While the focus seems evenly split between Wil and Jason, there is plenty of story shared with Chris, Raena, and others. This really emphasizes the point that the story isn’t about one of the dynastic heirs, but as the culture as a whole. After stopping to digest the story, one recurring theme in the book is showing how the “cultural elites” of this dynastic family are working to overcome long biases and trying to unify as a people.
While there’s a inspirational unifying message, there’s a great humanistic story for the individuals. The challenges of leading, the ache of an amicable breakup of longtime friends as they move on in life, and the heartache of the loss of a loved one to name just a few. All this while trying to save humanity and not lose their own humanity. A DuBoff has outdone herself integrating the individual lives and weaving their challenges into the whole while not losing either. I definitely recommend Empire Reborn and am anxiously awaiting the next book.
The Rift in space is quite the anomaly and is with right treated with respect. In my mind it became like attempting to look into the a swirling abyss, seeing nothing really but so aware of the dangers lurking there. And for Jason Sietinen it is a previous vision that serves the same purpose. However, having it become reality too as a very dangerous alien entity starts off with disintegrating a salvaging spaceship. This act is to send waves of alarm throughout Taran space. And if that was but the only headache. On one of the Taran worlds insurrection has also started to rear its ugly head. The title, Empire Reborn, seems rather at odds with the events unfolding here. Yet not. And you'll be forgiven if thinking so. Instead the makings of the birth of a greater unity is all there for the discerning reader to pick up. Yes, it is make or break time. And does in Empire Reborn. I can hardly wait to see what lies ahead in this new series as enough and some rather intriguing threads has already ably been woven into a thickening plot that promises some major surprises laying ahead. Enjoy.
This book opens a new chapter, revealing more challenges and growth for the TSS (and a new 3-letter team ;~). Wil, Jason, Saera, Raena, other familiar heroes, and some kick-ass new ones, are faced with two mysterious problems - one ancient, and the other brand new. I can see that the ongoing story is gonna be a wild ride - this first book of the new series not only is a good story in itself, but also seems to set the stage for mind bending twists and turns to come (fear not, there’s no “cliffhanger” ending). The scope, believe it or not, expands even further than Cadicle - both very close to home, and in literally unimaginable other directions. **** Y’all are gonna LOVE IT !! ****
This is a wonderful addition to Ms. DuBoff’s catalog. The characters have depth and the story is riveting. Plenty of action as well as character development. I won’t go into the storyline since the blurb covers that. Some knowledge of the prior work in the Cadicle Universe would be helpful but isn’t necessary to enjoy this book. I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review but enjoyed it so much that I purchased a copy.
We now follow our favorite dynasty into uncharted territory as they must face empire-wide unrest and an extra-dimensional threat. I enjoyed the book immensely and can't wait to see the next installment.
Love this book. It is a great 1st book to a new space adventure. It is fast paced with intriguing mysteries. I really enjoyed it. I liked the main character and the more complex relationships. Can’t wait for the next one. After I finished I found out there are other book in different series that can lead up to this one too!
The story in this book is both heart breaking emotional and suspense-fully exciting. For me the story was the science fiction version of an old western serial movie, action, drama, hand wringing suspense, interesting characters, and leaving me anxious and excited for the next installment. A very fun and entertaining read.
Some interesting concepts here. I haven't read previous books in this universe and according to the author this will be a stand alone series so you don't need to know all that has happened before. I think I'll have to see how I reflect on this before I get further into the series.
