Bowhunter and ultramarathoner Cameron Hanes narrates his audiobook with guest appearances from Joe Rogan and David Goggins. Listen in to push beyond your physical limits and improve yourself by following Hanes's lifelong philosophies and disciplines.
“It’s all mental.”
I say this all the time, and it’s true.
If you believe you can do it, you can.
We all have virtually limitless potential.
Our bodies are capable of so much more than what we ask of them.
Take off the mental handcuffs, get out there, and start on your way today.
What is your passion? You can become better at it.
Committing yourself to fitness only fuels your beliefs.
You gotta believe to achieve.
Cameron Hanes discovered his true passion for bowhunting when he was twenty. Inspired by the physical challenges of stalking elk in the Oregon wilderness—traversing mountainous terrain, braving erratic weather, and evading his quarry’s even more dangerous predators—he began an ever-evolving journey of self-improvement. To become the best bowhunter of wild elk, to the caliber he believed he could be, Cam realized he would need more than archery skills. He would need the stamina and strength that could only come from an athletic training regimen of long-distance running and heavy-weight lifting. And every day for more than thirty years, Cam has put in the work, building miles and muscles, pushing through pain with a single-minded focus on the only goal worth having—besting himself time and again.
Part memoir, part motivational manifesto, Endure reveals how Cam—a self-professed average guy—put himself through the paces to live the life of an expert bowhunter, respected writer, and family man. With discipline, sacrifice, resilience, a hard work ethic, and a belief in his own capabilities, Cam not only accomplished his dreams but continues to surpass them. There is no secret to his success except relentless determination and loyal dedication to his own self-worth.
If Cam can do it, we all can. Everyone has what it takes to endure adversity so we can rise above average, be the best we can be, and enjoy living life to the fullest.

In the Foreword, Joe Rogan talks about his respect for the dedication, determination and sheer willpower of Cam Hanes. He highlights some of Hanes' remarkable achievements, and how Hanes has inspired him to keep pushing himself.
Hanes starts the book by describing his introduction to bowhunting in the Prologue, and then begins Chapter 1 with his childhood and early love of running. He explains that his father was an elite athlete and celebrated track star in Oregon, and this likely contributed to young Hanes pushing himself to keep running. Running a mile a day at age five is obviously not normal, and just a few pages into this book you start to understand how Hanes has achieved such feats of endurance in his life.
At the end of each chapter, there is a “Callout” section. These sections are usually a few pages long, and are more focused on motivational words, as opposed to the regular chapters that are more of a memoir. Throughout the book there are also dozens of black-and-white photos of Hanes and his family over the years, usually with captions explaining the picture.
Throughout the rest of the book Hanes follows this pattern, alternating between memoir chapters that describe the events in his life and motivational “Callout” sections. He covers his battle with alcoholism, including multiple accidents and fights. He explains how becoming a father changed him, and what he learned from friends like Roy Roth. He shares lessons learned in the wilderness stalking his prey, and lessons learned while trying to become a successful writer.
Overall I really enjoyed reading this. Hanes includes many inspirational quotes throughout the book, and they help add to this unique combination of autobiography and motivational guide. Whether you are a fan of bowhunting or not, it is hard to argue with the fact Hanes is a legendary endurance athlete. I appreciate Hanes sharing these stories about the forces that helped shape him into such a determined and focused person, and his motivational “Callouts” are a powerful way to inspire you to
“keep hammering.”
Though I am not a bow hunter I found every page in this book relevant to me…. A struggling medically retired veteran trying to climb my own damn mountain.
This was the perfect book for a very poignant kick in the rear end.
The Mountain, signifies a goal, a transcendence from ones own nihilism and despair, if you so choose to take on the challenge.
Climb that Mountain, whatever that may be.
I've read the book and listened to the audio book. In effort to not be a total fanboy, I don't think Cam is the best story teller but he does a pretty damn good job for a bowhunter. I love his mantra of not giving advice, he more simply says what he does. I can respect and appreciate that approach. So while Cam doesn't give advice I think we need to analyze his actions and results to understand that both his successes in bowhunting and even ultra running really do speak for themselves. Cam's found a way to work harder and now lives a life surrounded by greats for other fields which he continues to instill their mindsets into honing his own craft. From Cam's early decision in life when he found bow hunting that lead a life inspired to stop drinking and dedicate himself to his craft, to being obsessed, not listening to his haters or the "must be nice" crowd, and so on, this book leads by example for chasing your passions and dreams.
I will say that ironically (or maybe not so ironically...) I'm running again and loving it. My first 3 weeks back admittedly sucked bad and hurt. Since starting running again 50 days ago, I've only missed 3 runs. After the hardship and pain in the first 3 weeks I now look forward to daily runs despite how sore, busy, or even unmotivated I am because I know that during and after that sense of accomplishment and mind clearing is worth it. As a father of a very active 2.5 year old, getting back into running is for me and him. I need to be able to keep up, have a strong heart and have the energy to help him chase his dreams. I feel that running will help me do that. I'm also going into my local bow shop soon to chase a long time goal of bow hunting. My wife and I renovated her grandparents farm home that sits on 110 acres, so I'm excited to be more self-sufficient. I know that her grandpa would have a big smile on his face knowing that I'm hunting the land that he had hunted for over 60 years now.
So, I definitely want to thank Cam for lighting a fire under me to be better, start checking goals off of my list and find my passion to be obsessed over. Keep Hammering!
