Rick Hanson's life works (30 years) has been the in the fields of neuroscience and psychology and as an instructor of meditation. His newest offering, The Enlightened Brain focuses on the space where these three circles overlap. Hanson's previous work, Buddha's Brain is among the pioneers of research combining neurology, psychology and meditation. Before beginning The Enlightened Brain, I assumed it would likely repackage the many important principles of Buddha's Brain. While the book does reintroduce those important concepts, The Enlightened Brain builds upon his prior work with further scientific detail and insight sprinkled with well constructed meditation practices throughout the seven CDs.
This book works through 6 stages of self discovery while describing mechanics and structure of the brain and the subjective experience of the mind. The author guides you through meditative practices after instructing you of physical and mental processes that will occur and the neural changes that can result. Not only can you have the intention for greater peace, happiness and equanimity, you can also carve the trail that leads you there.
The script of this audio book is intellegently crafted and delivered. I appreciate when an author introduces an insightful concept and then follow with" for example..." demonstrating this idea in everyday experience. And like Buddha's Brain, the material is summarized at the end of each chapter. This book is stimulating to the experienced student as well as comprehendible to the beginners mind. I would like to see this material offered in high schools. As far as prerequisite, it is not necessary to read Buddha's Brain prior to listening to The Enlightened Brain, but it could certainly enhance its benefit. In my opinion, both books can and will improve our life experience.
