Rarely does an author of non-fiction achieve an action packed, heart-pumping thriller, and yet, Kershaw accomplishes exactly that in publishing, “The Envoy,” the story of Swedish born, Raoul Wallenberg. The Swede, sent on a mission to Hungary during WW II, worked tirelessly to save beleaguered and hunted Hungarian Jews and Jewish refugees in Hungary. The book is personable, highly informative, and accordingly, graphic.
In the spring of 1944, Hitler authorized, Operation Margarethe, the annihilation of the last vestige of Jews in occupied Europe. In March, Adolf Eichmann marched into Budapest. Immediate round-ups ensued and Eichmann began shipping three thousand Jews a day to Auschwitz.
In combined effort, contacts under President Roosevelt in coordination with officials in the Swedish Government initiated a stand. Raoul Wallenberg arrived to Budapest in July of 1944, and with limited power from the Swedish Crown, faced down Nazis as well as Hungarian Government officials and Hungarian Police when need be. Wallenberg battled the daily dictates of Adolf Eichmann, and the Hungarian Arrow Cross who were determined to kill every last one of the 725,000 Jews in Hungary. During the summer of 1944, the Nazis sent 450,000 Hungarian Jews to their deaths in Auschwitz.
It is unknown exactly the number of Jews Wallenberg saved from the Nazis transports and the Hungarian Arrow Cross collaborators, but it is estimated between 20,000 to 100,000 Jews. After the Nazi retreat from Hungary, approximately 124,000 Jews were left alive in Hungary, due directly to Wallenberg’s relentless effort, together with the Swiss and Spanish delegates, the Swiss Embassy and officials in Hungary.
Decades later, Soviet officials returned Wallenberg’s few possessions to the family,(who never gave up their search for him), but never his remains. The Soviet government finally admitted in 1989, after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, that Raoul Wallenberg died in Soviet custody in 1947. Raoul Wallenberg holds the title in the Guinness Book of World Records of having saved the most lives, by an individual. The fascinating, highly informative book serves as a tribute to the indomitable moral character of Raoul Wallenberg.

I am still in the middle of this one. Even though Hollywood has brought some of the story to light, it is even better to read the words and thoughts of some of the actual participants. This period of time and the events portrayed in this book makes the Israeli phrase "Never Again!" much more meaningful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impactful story

Another difficult book to read. Mr. Kershaw is one of my favorite historians. His narratives flow like David McCulloughs, telling hard stories in relatable ways. What struck me reading Raoul Wallenberg's (and his team) saving thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust is that I had never heard of him before. I did not realize the extent of European Jews fleeing to Hungary only to find persecution there. I knew nothing of the Arrow Cross thugs. I did not know this is where Eichmann served his last years of the war. The brutality of the Nazis and the Arrow Cross is still beyond my comprehension. This book shows their pure evilness in direct contrast to the kindness and generosity of others. If you read WWII history, don't skip this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing story of courage in the face of evil

I knew a little about Raoul Wallenberg and Adolf Eichmann before I read this book. I was aware that Wallenberg saved thousands of Jews during the war and I knew enough to name my son Raoul in his honor.
What I didn't know was how much he risked his life doing so, his struggles with the SS and Hungarian Arrow Cross, and his mysterious disappearance after the Soviets arrested him.

This book tells the story of the Jews in Hungary during the war, their struggle to survive, first under an anti-semitic regime, then under the Nazis themselves, and finally under the local Nazis in the form of the Arrow Cross party, the evil that is Eichmann, and the desperate efforts of a few to save the Jews. Although anti-semitism was rampant in Hungary before the war, the Jews were somewhat spared the fate their brethren suffered in Poland, Ukraine, Netherlands, and other German-occupied countries during the war. Until 1944 when the Nazis, in particular Adolf Eichmann, decided that all Jews in Hungary, at all costs, should all be deported to the death camps.
In came the Swede Wallenberg, who together with other diplomats in Budapest, tried to save as many Jews as they can by issuing (sometimes) fake documents to make it appear that the jews were under the protection of Sweden or Switzerland. In a continuous tug of war with Eichmann and the notorious Arrow Cross thugs, Wallenberg would eventually succeed in saving around 100,000 Jews from deportation to the death camps. Sometimes he would save the victims in the nick of time, just before they board the train to Auschwitz, or just before they were to be shot.
The last few months before the Russians came were especially horrifying with the Hungarian Nazis murdering and terrorizing the Jews in a reign of terror.

The final third of the book tells what happened to the main protagonists Eichmann and Wallenberg, and some of the survivors, after the war. Everyone knows what happened to Eichmann, but unfortunately the end of Wallenberg's story remains a mystery, partly due to the Russian's stubborn refusal to cooperate, and partly due to the Swedish government's spineless abandonment of one of it's most heroic and remarkable citizens.
This is a well-written and inspiring book and I highly recommend it.

Kershaw has done it! There are acts of bravery in wartime;they are usually accounts of the battlefield or a resistance group. Rarely has there ever been such prolonged exposure to danger on behalf of the persecuted as Raoul Wallenberg's rescue of thousands of Hungarian Jews. For months this Swedish diplomat repeatedly 'stuck his head in the mouth of the lion' to save those headed for the Nazi death camps. Battling the Nazis and the Hungarian fascist Arrow Cross, this determined envoy pressed ahead where fainter men refused to venture. This gripping account is in a class of its own. This brave Swede remains a sterling example of self-giving without thought of personal risks. Read it and be inspired!

So it says in the Talmud. It can be said that Wallenberg through his actions helped save thousands of worlds.

I recently finished reading this book and the story it told was just amazing. I'd heard of Raoul Wallenberg before of course, but really only a few brief facts about him and never knew that the Nazi he tangled with in saving Jewish lives was none other than the notorious Adolf Eichmann. Wallenberg wasn't alone in his efforts to save Jews from annihilation in the death camps and the book gives some detail about these other good diplomats, but he is the main focus. All in all this is a very fascinating account of a time period that can still surprise one at the level of brutality and pure evil that was unleashed upon the world, yet also such incredible acts of compassion, faith, goodness and grace.

This book shows us the unspeakable horrors of war in a way no regular history book can. The individual and tragic stories of the people and the heroism of Raoul Wallenberg is humbling. This would an excellent book for a war history curriculum.

Alex Kershaw delivers again with a fast paced and confronting look at the plight of the Hungarian Jews and the efforts of one man to save as many as he could. Raoul Wallenberg is a name I had not come across before, now that I have I believe this man needs to be honored and remembered. By making sure this man does not get lost in the mist of history is important to remind us of what he fought for and to ensure it never happens again. Hats off to the author for bringing this incredible story to light in such a enthralling way.

One of the most throught-provoking and enlightening books I've ever read. I had long heard of Raoul Wallenberg, but had no idea of the extent of his bravery and depth of caring. What the Nazis during during the Holocaust was horrible, but to learn of the day-to-day misery of those living in Budapest was beyond comprehension. I know that this book will stay with me forever, and I recommend it, especially as a part of a history class in school.

A well written, balanced historical document on the heroic actions of Raoul Wallenberg in Budapest at the end of WWII. After saving hundred of thousands Jews from certain extermination, he was taken away by the Russians and later killed by Stalin. A huge man, who will remain in human memory forever. Kershaw has, once again, excelled himself.

This book draws a vivid portrait of Raoul Wallenberg and some of the many people he rescued. In terms of style and presenting the human dimension of the man, it is perhaps the best I have read. Because it presents Wallenberg through the eyes of real people whom he rescued, the reader gains a heartfelt sense of the terror and unimaginable evil that was set loose on Hungary. I especially like that he follows up with what happened to these people after the Holocaust and what they are doing today. Some of the stories are heart-breaking, others inspiring. He also writes of the Wallenberg family and how their efforts to find and save their son and brother were thwarted at every turn. That is among the saddest stories of all. Having read some previous books on Wallenberg, the one thing I would like to have seen but didn't would be an analysis of reports that had him alive in the Gulags decades after his arrest. Early accounts are explored in details, but those from the 60s onward are only mentioned in passing. I'd like to know what the author thought of them.
