1.0 out of 5 starsOne of the WORST films featuring Stallone
Verified purchase
As a true-blue Stallone fan, I buy just about every movie he is in. I was looking forward to this sequel ever since it was announced. Yes, it is highly disappointing that Schwarzenegger didn’t appear, but the teaming of Stallone and Dave Bautista (Drax in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies) held promise.

Truth is, Stallone and Bautista are supporting players here to a bunch of actors I’d never seen before. “Hades” is co-financed by Chinese production companies and apparently the movie was intended primarily as a showcase for some Chinese action stars that will be unfamiliar to most U.S, viewers. Which would be fine — IF the movie has been good.

But it’s downright unwatchable. Confusing, boring, poorly told, cheap sets, and just over all everything one would expect from a piece of crap low-budget direct-to-video release. And there ARE some good direct-to-video movies out there, especially these days when they often feature big-name stars. But this is just lame and it bears virtually zero resemblance to the first one — except that Stallone’s character is Ray Breslin (who now has his own security firm) and Fifty Cent returning as well.

Stallone is in it just enough to justify a look from hardcore fans. But this is seriously one of the worst films he has Ever appeared in. And this coming from someone who owns “Stop or My Mom Will Shoot” on DVD and who has watched it multiple times!

Wasn't expecting much, but this may be the worst movie I've ever seen. Only got halfway through it and couldn't take anymore. I'd rather get punched in the face every morning for the next 3 weeks than see how this movie ends.

4.0 out of 5 starsA Stylized Adrenaline Rush

A taut, violent thriller delivered like a brutal kick in the face. Some of the negative reviews were upset about Stallone taking a back seat and about all the new folks. Myself, I was initially a bit dubious about Stallone. He's getting too old to be a credible action figure anymore. Thankfully, he took a more laid back mentor role and left most of the murderous mayhem to younger folks. And those new kids certainly brought the mayhem. Other negative reviews didn't like the way the story was told. The storytelling really was lean, with all extraneous material cut away, leaving a frenetic pace that somehow seemed fitting both to the story and to the times we are in. So I'm going to have to go against the majority on this one and give the film a positive review with a solid 4 stars. My suggestion to you is that if you like action thrillers, don't be put off by the bad reviews. Watch a bit of the movie and decide for yourself if you like this style or not.

5.0 out of 5 starsWasn't a strikeout or a home run either, that said...

...I enjoyed it for what it was. Had Sly, Bautista, Metcalf, and Chatham. Had action. Had halfway decent intrigue. Do I envision ANYONE standing behind a podium accepting an award for it? Nope. But who cares? The one star sad sacks would whine if their mama gave 'em two popsicles. Me? I enjoyed it. Gave it five stars to say so. Now if you're just looking for a bit of action instead of watching sitcom reruns, or worse late night TV nitwits downing our nation, give Escape Plan 2: Hades about 90 minutes of your time. What have you got to lose?

Escape Plan 2: Hades: 3 out of 10: Sylvester Stallone runs a firm that breaks people out of prison. After a job goes bad the team breaks up only to be brought back together when a new secret prison, the titular Hades, threatens one of their own.

The Good: Dave Bautista is fun for the three minutes or so he is in the movie.

I also like the way the sets are a throwback to the Full Moon pictures of the 1980’s with all the neon and bad special effects.

The Bad: Dave Bautista is the only fun interesting character in the movie. The way he has been arguing with Disney we may see him in a lot more direct to video films like this. His loss is honestly our gain.

The movie Cube managed a much more effective future prison look on a much smaller budget twenty years ago. I found the sets and special effects hilariously bad. I am not sure the filmmakers really meant that.

The Ugly: To say this movie's plot makes no sense is an understatement. The futuristic prison contains advanced technology (healing robots, virtual reality etc) that is certainly more profitable to market to the outside world than the current kidnap people and makes them fight so they will reveal the industrial secrets business plan. It is like one of those movies where the bad guy invents a ray that can control the weather and then decided to use it to rob a bank.

In Conclusion: I have not seen the first Escape Plan but I understand it isn’t that bad a movie. Why they thawed out Sylvester Stallone for this junk I have no idea. This is clearly one of those international co-productions meant for foreign audiences. This is not always a bad thing. Bloodrayne is an awful movie filled with international stars but it is also a fun movie filled with sex, violence and hammy acting. This honestly has no action, nudity or violence. Just a bunch of nobodies wandering around a set from 1980’s The Apple while some American stars pop in for glorified cameos. More purgatory than Hades I am afraid.

I loved Escape Plan, because I love action movies, but this was NOT that. So boring, not interesting at all, wooden acting, and actually wished that every character would just get together in one room and that room would explode. I watched this while I was folding laundry and it actually made the task more enjoyable because it gave me a reason to take my eyes off the film. That’s the only reason it got 1 star, instead of zero.

1.0 out of 5 starsNot worth $1.08 to watch

The only thing good about this movie was I only paid $1.08 to rent this joke. The bad thing was the entire crappy movie. They put to much makeup on ol'e Sylvester. It looks like they put it on with a butter knife. It just gets worse from there. Don't waste even $1.08 to watch this whatever it is.
