I was very please when I started reading this book. My hope is there will be many more in this series. Great descriptions and relating fact with fiction. I didn't expect this book, I really didn't stop reading this book until I finished it. It's one of those books when you start reading you just can't wait of the next part.

First off great job, love the pseudo steampunk, love the secret dungeons, it really adds this whole star ocean element to the story where you're not sure if it's all a game or he really gets isekaied. My biggest problems are the whole, everyone using Chicago typewriters. I love the Thompson but it's certainly not steam punk, I wouldn't even classify it as diesel punk, probably need to use a steyr for something like diesel punk. The other problem was the cheap copy villains Dar Caul, really? Otherwise pretty nice, and I'm excited for more in the universe, real or not.

his world to the world of Umbria, which is the UK. He is pulled into the Royal Venture Society when he meets up with Lady Blair, Chance and Baron Swarthmoor, known as Bixby, in an underground vault and frees them from their cells. More adventures follow as they make their way to the surface and and fight off the bad guys. So many clever inventions such a wallet that holds machine guns and other seemingly impossible items. Can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Steampunk with a twist or several

First off let me disclose that I am not a fan of steampunk. I don't have anything against it, I just don't read much of it. Honestly, I'm not sure this book would be considered steampunk, but that is what it seems to be to me. There are many twists throughout that make it appealing to fans of Reed's prior work. The book starts with a soldier in a virtual battle getting sucked into an alternate universe that is way behind ours, technology wise. Our hero quickly saves a band of trapped fighters in this new world. They take him in, and adventures abound. One interesting twist is our hero has an implant which keeps track of his various skills as if he is still in a virtual (game?) world.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Oddly others in this world are familiar with different skills and how to level up even though presumably they don't have implants?!? There are a few other fun bits like the interspatial wallet, that allows the holder to essentially have unlimited storage space for any gear they might need. Seems like a bit of cheat, but I'm willing to suspend disbelief. The story is entertaining and well-paced. It's not my favorite book by this author, but I am ready for the next in the series and would encourage everyone to give a read.

What do you take when you start with a future dystopian earth whose military conflicts exist in the virtual world and mix it with the England in the past, yet England has a sci-fi complexity to it? Hell, I don't know, but I like it! The protagonist Rip is cast out of his time line and thrown into another one where the past and present collide. The hero now must adapt to his new surroundings as he is thrust into the middle of an up and coming conflict between the crown and its antagonists who live underground in the steam tunnels of the unknown. Caught in a world he cannot escape, Rip must decide whose side he's on and draw his own lines in fighting for the crown and looking for a possible way home. He meets a small group of adventurers who is employed by the crown. They are enhanced, giving them each upgraded abilities which dwarf a basic human. These abilities grow as they engage in elements of warfare, espionage, technology and weaponry. Join Rip as he ascends into the unknown, fighting for a world he is not a part of, but never losing focus on who he is and where he is going. Will he get the girl? Will he figure out how to return? Will he even want to? The author does a wonderful job with the language of the novel, flow and creativity. You will enjoy this novel and perhaps the characters within. Strap in because around each corner our heroes go, a new roadblock presents itself and no one character is safe from possible death. A must read!

I read many fantasy, SF and RPG type books for fun. This one is a super example of a new world with clever characters and sophisticated world building. A Victorian type theme in a steampunk alternative dimension, the language is amusingly old fashioned British when people speak. The country is a mirror of an equivalent British Empire with a different history but some parallels with our reality. I like the MC, a US soldier from a future time, somewhat out of place in a class divided society, but making the best of a series of challenges. Really enjoyed reading it, looking forward to the next book, hopefully one of many. Highly recommended.

Ein Soldat aus einer VR-Einheit findet sich plötzlich wieder in einer Steampunk-Welt ähnlich dem viktorianischen England. Alle großen Städte sind um Vaults herum erbaut welche Hinterlassenschaftenl des Äquivalents der Römer sein sollen und die Städte mit Gas und Strom versorgen. Diese Vaults sind aber auch gleichzeitig so etwas wie Dungeons in welchen Schätze zu finden sind und deren Bewohner den umliegenden Städten feindlich eingestellt sind. So weit ist die Handlung eigentlich gut allerdings zeigen sich deutliche Schwächen sowohl im historischen als auch technischen Hintergrund dieser Welt. Historisch wäre zum Beispiel dass wenn wie im Buch beschrieben das "römische Reich" nie eine Reichsteilung und Niedergang erlebt hat sondern bis zum Ende des frühen Mittelalters überlebt hat würde es die heutigen europäischen Länder nicht geben, keine Karolinger, keine Vorstoß des Islam.... Ebenso wären die Vaults als Hinterlassenschaft der "Römer" auf gewissen Gebiete beschränkt. Technisch wären die Grenzen zu nennen in dem solche Vaults umliegende Städte mit Dampf und Gas versorgen könnten sowie die geschilderten Dampfmaschinen, welche anscheinend ohne Ofen auskommen sowie die geschildeten Golems/Roboter deren Steuerung und Antrieb nicht erklärbar scheinen. Auch scheint der Autor unbedingt bekannte Klischees aus dem viktorianischen Englands bzw Geschichen darausunbedingt unterbringen zu wollen wie z. B. Jack the Ripper.
