Family bonding by building an arc

What better way to bond with the family than building an arc for the great flood God warned about. That’s the premise of Evan Almighty as Steve Carell is a new congressman who neglects his wife and kids for his job. He gets shaken out of that when Morgan Freeman as God appears and tells him he’s got a job for him to do. Carell plays his usual everyman role. I liked when Freeman first showed up and freaked out Carell. That led to a lot of funny moments. You can imagine what happens when two of every animal starts showing up at his house. That’s what the movie does best setting up comedic moments. Mixed in with that is a little environmental message as well.

Mostly funny, and some dabbing of tears perhaps

8-5-17 2nd viewing after a long time. Couldn't remember most of it, and especially the knot tying. Made for solid entertainment, but glad I only rented. By the time I'm again in this schmaltz?-I-love-it-pour-it-on-me mood, it'll be streaming for "free" at Netflix.

A family film, and you won't be bothered thereby by this material's staying within moral boundaries the Pilgrims would be happy to sponsor. But there's tons of laughs that might be tried-and-true, but they're nicely timed, don't overstay their welcome, and freshened a goodly lotta. If you're not a person of faith in these kinds of doings, hey, put all that aside, this is Bible-lite stuff and the audience is not required to resonate with the very few parts that are, well, scripturally necessitated. This is not Bruce Almighty or Absolutely Anything; it stands by itself -- an equal in its own way. 60 year parts of me were as comfy as could be with most of this, but the film's humor definitely has a reach beyond one's inner child.

After 50 views, I could watch it again...

This is one of my favorite movies of all time! From start to finish, you get the WORD with a spoonful of sugar to make the medicine go down. Not everyone is ready for the unadulterated Gospel. However, if you can present truth that is relatable, with practical applications, you can foster a faith that will grow to seek the meat that is required for mature belief in the God who holds the world in His hands. I must have seen this movie fifty times since 2007 and every time, I find another gem! Last night, I watched Evan Almighty with my son, who was not born when the film first aired, but who is now 12 years old. He has also seen the movie before, but last night, he did a review of the film and even showed me things I had not seen. For example, my initials are SRG and the manufacturer's emblem on the GPS is GRS. There are so many stand-out points in this film that I still endear me today as much as they did at my first viewing. I can even watch it again tonight... and I think I will.

Great movie... but...

They way they did "Bruce Almighty" was excellent! This one has the same great comedy in it, but they just throw in some heavy biblical things now and then that just flatline the comedy. You didnt get this in "Bruce Almighty", why did you have to throw in that stuff with this one??

Still a good movie, but nowhere near the rewatch ability as Bruce Almighty. They really missed that target.

A really enjoyable DVD

One of the most entertaining movies I've seen lately. Predictable, ridiculous storyline has some exaggerated antics, but the entire movie presents as a relaxing, good humored way to enjoy about 90 minutes, provided nothing is taken seriously (e.g., religion, politics). The human cast is surprisingly good, with Steve Carell doing a great job moderating what could have been an over the top silly lead. The non-human cast is outstanding, and the special feature on that is a real bonus.

I smiled from start to finish, something I rarely do.

Weird, and a little humorous.

Th movie does have funny parts, I mean it has Molly Shannon and other funny people in its cast. But the ask thing, the whole ark play for a river flood of sorts is just absurd. It plays too much of suspension of belief for a stupid plot, that is why I stopped watching.

Watch it with your younger kids - they'll love it!

You know what I like about this movie? I could watch this with my 6 year daughter without having to explain swear words or inappropriate situations. I couldn't do that with "Bruce Almighty" and wouldn't watch it with the younger kids. Steve Carell is so funny - how may times can you hit your thumb with a hammer and make people laugh. Steve's facial expressions had my daughter cracking up most of the movie. She loved it....and I did too and appreciated seeing her laugh hysterically at Steve's antics.

If you want to bring joy back in your life and experience the genius of film making, THIS MOVIE IS IT! It will cause you to forget all the craziness of life going on at this time, and fill you with so much laughter, even your body will benefit! Laughter is good for everything!!! And the moral of this unique story is SO EXCELLENT, if we all could just embrace it, we'd change our world for good in a short time!!
