Dean’s wife is dead. Her last words: When the ships come...wear the necklace.
Then the ships arrived.
Cities all around the world reported strange alien vessels descending. Some saw them as the heralds of a new age; others fired everything they had at them. All were taken as the beams lashed down and drew them into the sky.
Dean was left behind, seemingly the last man on Earth.
A trail of clues left by his dead wife guide Dean on a perilous journey across America and beyond, to learn the truth behind the mysterious ships and save humanity from its doom.
But not everything is as it seems.
The Event is the epic first novel of the best-selling Survivors series.

An unexpectedly great read, the book is a maze of conspiracies, counter conspiracies and betrayal. Just when you think you've got most of it figured out, another level of complexity appears. Starts a little bit slowly, giving you a chance to get to know our hero. Stick with it and you'll be happy you did.
A little fast when moving between events and a little more development would be appropriate. Maybe this should have been two books rather than one. What happens when the stuff you need is not right in front of you. Was Dean just lucky. Liked the interaction between the characters. Did anyone talk with Ray's family?
Nathan Hystad is somewhere in the middle of both. He gives you some background about the tech but really lets you fill in the gaps. I find that I'm fine with that because he gives me enough to accept the tech and not be too concerned with the mechanics. Not something that always works for me. If you want really hard science fiction this is probably not the series for you but if you are willing to ride along it just might be a fun ride.
I think the way he paints his characters is very similar. I know them, I like them and I want to keep reading about them but there are some aspects of them that I find hard to accept. Again all I can say is that when I get to the end I will probably be very sorry to see them leave me.
As I said, I am already reading book 10 of 18 and I am going to keep on reading to the end. I think my time is well spent and I think you may feel the same way if you do the same.
First, the writer keeps the action going and, for me at least, engaged the reader sufficiently that I wanted to keep reading.
Second, there are numerous logical and literary flaws that hopefully can be improved upon with a bit of editing, a little research, good beta-readers, and additional experience.
Finally, there were several intriguing ideas that worked for me. If the writer will consider the excellent advice given in many of the lower-rated reviews, I expect we will have more interesting work ahead.

There were supposed to be twists in the story with double-crossing characters increasing the tension and building anticipation. Unfortunately, there were no surprises. You can see the twists coming a mile off.
The only thing dimmer than our main characters is the really dim aliens. Their technology might be quite good, but they are too stupid to conquer galaxies really. With all the advantages of being like a Star Trek alien (similar height, humanish, breathes our atmosphere, OK with our gravity and can speak English), they were still unable to get away with it. Just daft and light. The sort of thing you can read while operating heavy machinery.
I don't think I'll be buying the sequel.

Hmmmm, I don't quite understand the rave reviews others have given it. It is well written, and the main characters are fully fleshed and believable but and its a big but for me!
It's the story, it gets more and more fantastical as it goes. Now I've been reading science fiction for nearly 55 years now so its not that I'm not used to incredible story lines but.....I don't want to give away spoilers, but I'm afraid I have to a little. So!.crossing the Atlantic in just 4 days is close to the record! The journey to Machu Picchu in the timescale they had is just not credible, its 1600 plus miles at least! A character running up the last part of the approach to the city beggars belief.. come on its 14,000 feet above sea level, it usually takes people two weeks to just adjust to the altitude going up in stages!
Then we get to the Independence Day scenario of being able to fly an alien space craft......
I finished the book but I don't think I 'll be rushing to read the next. This one was fairly polished but could still have done with a little proof reading and some serious editorial input to make it more believable.
The author is clearly influenced by Cinema and TV that have addressed this situation. So its an okay book but not a hit for me!

However, I read it to the end, so that is a plus. I don't see myself ever reading it again though, as I regularly do with other books (another mark of a good book).
Sorry, Nathan !!

If you have NOT read this book yet, then do so NOW! You will NOT be disappointed I assure you. The Author writes with excitement on every page you cannot stop turning - Nowhere in this book is there any irrelevant rubbish that some Authors love to fill the pages with - This book is ACTION through and through from page 1 to the end, get ready for a brilliant read.
Cannot wait for the follow up 'New Threat' (The Survivors Book Two).
