Master Sergeant Reed Beckham has led his Delta Force Team, codenamed Ghost, through every kind of hell imaginable and never lost a man. When a top secret Medical Corps research facility goes dark, Team Ghost is called in to face their deadliest enemy yet--a variant strain of Ebola that turns men into monsters.
After barely escaping with his life, Beckham returns to Fort Bragg in the midst of a new type of war. As cities fall, Team Ghost is ordered to keep CDC virologist Dr. Kate Lovato alive long enough to find a cure. What she uncovers will change everything.
Total extinction is just on the horizon, but will the cure be worse than the virus?

This is most definitely not your typical apocalypse read. This series incorporates "zombie-ish" creatures, sci-fi, military, and what I hope will become romance :) What more could you ask for?!
The characters are really well developed. There is the strong lead, quirky kid, massively strong side character, and more. There's not a single one you don't become invested in. To me, a great story is held up by your commitment to the characters. Only truly great authors can achieve such a feat.
Just when you think the story is over something new is introduced that leaves ready to devour the next book. Will the problem be solved? Will the world be saved? Will the relationship blossom? Will the guilty be punished? Can't wait to find out.
And finally, the narrator, if you are an Audible junky like myself then get the Audible! It added so much creepiness to the creatures and so much emotion to the characters.
I will, hands down, read anything from Nicholas Sansbury Smith. Thank you for writing!
This is the craziest, most action packed post-apocalyptic novel I have ever read! When books use the term "action packed," what they mean is "action included." This book is figuratively crammed and stuffed to a near bursting capacity with thrilling action scenes. I've never been so oblivious to my surroundings before, as I read this in one sitting from start to finish! The military characters are intimidatingly rough, athletic and organized, so when they struggle for survival against some horrifying creatures, you really get nervous and fear for the wellbeing of the planet.
Which brings me to the next point, that these are not typical zombies or diseased humans. These are disgusting and almost impossible-to-kill monsters that are the result of immense evolutionary twists from humans, who are turned into hungry beasts. Basically modified zombies on mass steroids. I think some of the scariest novels stem from having villains that overly dominate and have very few if any evident weaknesses. I was so nervous because it felt like characters were dying left and right, so you never really knew what would happen next. These creatures only seem to get stronger and stronger as you read through each book in this series.
That brings me to yet another point. All of the books in this series are epic. Sometimes sequels pale in comparison, but every one of these was as terrifying and attention grasping as the first. Luckily, all the books are out, so if you experience any cliffhangers, you can dive right into the next book.
If you want to read an intense and thrilling book that will stick with you long after you've finished, then I highly recommend this entire series!
The organization of the book keeps you interested and the ever twisting plot keeps the reader chomping to read chapter after chapter. I have been a billboard for this series of books. I'm already on book four and all I can think is when is Hollywood gonna make a movie out of this so I can buy that. I read a lot of end of the world books and this by far kept me interested page after page. Its a series that I would like to keep going and going, but all good things eventually come to an end. I hope its not too soon, but I am glad I came into the series after so many were published so I could read one an immediately follow it up with the next.

I am a shameless but rather furtive reader of post apocalyptic fiction (not at all appropriate for grown women, really!) I am all too aware that too often books of this genre are poorly written and badly characterised. However, Mr Smith has none of those flaws. His books (all that I've read) are completely gripping and completely realistic (ok,the zombies aside!). The characters in this novel are well rounded, and entirely believable. I found myself really wanting to know what would happen to them, even the supernumerary characters such as Brett or Chad. The books moves at a swift pace, but not so swift that it is impossible to keep up. However, there is a tension to the book that builds until the end which comes far too soon!
I thoroughly recommend this book to all other fans of apocalyptic fiction (grown women or otherwise!). And, if you have read none of Mr Smith's other books, comfort yourself by knowing that, while you wait for the final instalment in this cycle you can enjoy the Orbs series....whereas, I just have to wait!

I love this series and it’s rapidly becoming one of my favourite post apocalypse series, and for a nice change we are actually in at the beginning when everything starts to go wrong. This isn’t your usual EMP/Natural disaster story, rather it is about a virus that is being developed for the military, all in secret of course, and things go horribly wrong.
The characters are great, and develop nicely through the story, Reed Beckham is a guy you would love to have on your side!
So, is this the end of the human race? Will all the cast make it to the end? Well, you’ll just have to read the series to find out!

We get the back story of the manmade strain as well as the misguided reason for its resurgence. We also get the POV of the scientists as they try to find a cure, whilst the soldiers try to keep them alive.
Good characters, a strong storyline and very descriptive, so we can picture just what the infected have become.
My only problem with this book is that it didn't totally pull me in, there was certainly plenty going on but it seemed a little repetitive in places. As the first in the series it was a good start so I have hopes that the next will be better.

How understated that was. This book is amazing. Too many times books of this genre quote poor science or unbelievable characters or situations, but not this book. The world he creates is both real and terrifying. The zombies or in this case variants are a great upgrade from what is becoming a overused commodity. Being a walking dead fan I do like zombies but within the book I do love how such a notion is slapped down as these are not zombies they are so much more, more dangerous more interesting.
I could probably talk all day about this book and couldn't recommend it enough so in short buy this book you will not be disappointed. Enjoy guys
