Never-Before-Seen Stories from Your Favorite Mystery Authors: Jakubowski's many anthologies, like The Book of Extraordinary Historical Mystery Stories, have attracted plenty of attention and awards. His newest collection, The Book of Extraordinary Amateur Sleuths and Private Eye Stores, features never-before-seen stories by some of the most renowned American and British crime and thriller authors of today. If you have Jakubowski's other book, EXTRAORDINARY IMPOSSIBLE CRIMES & PUZZLING DEATHS, you might notice some familiar authors included here as well. Take DARKNESS IN THE CITY OF LIGHT, where a social club comprised of amateur sleuths attempts to recreate crime scenes to solve the case. Their methods, style, and humor are hard to digest. THE SINGLE HANDED SOLDIER is a period period piece set in antiquity of Roman Britain. Like THE GOLDEN PRINCESS found in the other book, it is a really weak entry for a mystery.
Now if you endured all that crud, you'll be rewarded with a few gems, such as REVELATION. It's a gripping tale of a photographer obsessed with solving a missing person case from years ago, full of intrigue and good detective work too. Then there's THE MYSTERY OF THE MISSING VERMEER and AROUND THE WORLD IN FIVE SERIAL MURDERS, with its baffling ending.
Due to the high number of rejects, I cannot recommend this book. Please, save yourself some money.
Seniors with creeping dementia will be challenged by its humor, pedestrian narrative and unimaginative conclusions.
