A brilliant extreme horror collection, and a great omnibus value.
Horror in the Woods by Lee Mountford is an Extreme Horror story with elements of the occult and the supernatural. It is more than a cannibalism story, more than a monster in the woods story, more than a dark occult story. It is a combination of all of these and more.
Mountford uses a vivid and eclectic group of characters in the story, characters with relatable backgrounds and personalities. This adds an element of realism and modernism to the story, which in turn creates a scary level of believability. I love how the characters develop over the course of the story, how they learn about themselves and each other when faced with horrifying circumstances.
Nothing is quite what it seems in Horror in the Woods. The story fools you by seeming to follow the classic formula in the beginning, giving the reader a false sense of predictability, but fans of Lee know better than to trust that. In true Lee Mountford fashion, the unexpected twists mess with your head as much as the skillfully foreshadowed twists. Lee cannot be properly accused of writing with a predictable flow, more of a haunted house ride flow. A fun ride for discerning horror readers, to be sure.

I would have read it in one if time had permitted. Tormented starts strong and stays strong. It grabs you by the cerebral cortex and doesn’t let go, doesn’t let up, and you don’t want it to. This was an amazing, captivating, horrifying read. I loved every sentence.
If I had paid more attention to the synopsis, I might not have waited so long to read it. You see (up there in the synopsis, you can see), Tormented is not just asylum horror, it is Asylum Cosmic Horror! Lee Mountford has expertly, beautifully combined the two subgenres into one horrifying, mind-bending story, and the mythos he has created is really quite terrifying. Let’s also be clear that Tormented is extreme horror. It is not the most horrifically graphic extreme horror I have ever read, but it most definitely is not for those with weak constitutions regarding graphic material and gore. Mountford’s descriptions are flowing in spite of the violence and gore, and he sometimes stops just short of graphic to allow the reader’s imagination to carry the visual the last few steps. I find this to be bit mind-fornicating, but one cannot deny the brilliance of it.
Tormented has subtle foreshadowing but is ultimately full of unpredictable turns of events. The characterization is smooth and methodical, always part of the story, much like learning about a character by watching a movie, or a person by being around them. I love Mountford’s writing style.
The Netherwell Horror is a brutal Lovecraftian horror story with definitive elements of cosmic horror, dark suspense, extreme horror, and occult horror. It’s a story of people, of choices, of horrors beyond comprehension. It is another gripping page-turner from Lee Mountford and the third book in the Extreme Horror Series, which I have now completed.
I am not entirely certain why the synopsis likens this novel to Silent Hill. I find The Netherwell Horror to be a far superior story with stronger characters. So, yes, I’m sure if you enjoyed Silent Hill you will enjoy The Netherwell Horror, as long as you can stomach the more graphic, extreme nature of the horror; but if you found Silent Hill to be mediocre, you will enjoy The Netherwell Horror.
