The first half of this book was a joy to read. I was highlighting line after line and was eager to see where Billie’s journey would take her. I love Tarryn’s broken characters because they help women feel as if the things they’ve been through aren’t unique to them. They bring people together and make us all feel less alone. Billie was no different, having gone through a traumatic divorce. She shows readers that healing doesn’t happen immediately, even two years later, Billie was still struggling to regain her footing.
“I’ve already been on life’s ride from hell. I know all the turns.”
Unfortunately, after the halfway mark in this book, the story crumbled. Billie wasn’t a character I could resonate with in the least and she became desperate and wishy-washy. I felt as if the plot twists were too cliche for a Tarryn Fisher novel and didn’t add to furthering the story. The characters were twisted in an indistinguishable web that I didn’t care to untangle. I found their reasons for hurting one another to be unrealistic excuses for bad behavior – no one accepted responsibility for their actions and it was exhausting. Thankfully Satcher made the story more bearable for me, but he still didn’t do anything worthwhile enough for a lengthy mention.
“We aren’t meant to stay the same. Life hits us from every direction, and we build thick skin in those places … calluses. It’s the way we survive.”
Most disappointing for me was the lack of closure on some of the details added to this story. The ending felt rushed and made me ponder the unanswered questions for hours after I finished. This simply is not a five-star book. It was too unorganized and felt pieced together.
The good news is that Tarryn writes books for all women, meaning all of us won’t relate to every book she writes. I’m more of a Margo and you may be more of a Senna, or Yara, or Billie. Naturally, women who have been wronged or through a divorce are going to relate to Billie in a big way. Authors are continually pushing their limits and evolving, just as the rest of us, and it’s ok to not find a piece of yourself in every book they write. Regardless, I’m going to continue to have high hopes for anything Tarryn puts out and be eagerly awaiting it with a greedy heart.
I’ve read Fck Love, Mud Vein and now Fck Marriage. With these particular stories I love the first half and then it all falls apart for me. The same happened with this book unfortunately.
Spoilers:
Billie was the type of character who was self destructive. She brought on a lot of pain herself. Trying to get between her ex and his fiancé, hiding the fact that her and satcher got together from her room mate Jules (though she didn’t know Jules had dated satcher until after she hooked up with him), then hiding that Jules was pregnant from Satcher, to running away to Washington again, to almost marrying Woods again... she just self sabataged herself left and right. Also I don’t think there’s a page in this book where she isn’t drinking or drunk. Would’ve been happier to see her get her life together, go to rehab.
But instead she calls off wedding to Woods, finally tells Satcher that she loves him after not speaking to him for a year?? And he now has a baby with her ex best friend Jules who hates her?? Just couldn’t even be happy for her in the end when she finally got her guy. But the story was an easy read that I enjoyed until around 50%.
I really have to stop that.
It’s not fair.
F*ck Marriage had me up and down with how I felt about this book. The excuses and justification for sh*tty behavior had me rolling my eyes at times. Then we get to 43% and I start to understand that through Billie’s eyes, we are in her head and she’s trying to navigate through the rubble and aftermath of her life as she knew it. I get it. Closure isn’t always given.
Now I gave this book 3 stars for one reason: poor execution. This book had a couple of story lines that I personally didn’t feel flowed together the way the were intended. I wasn’t convinced that Billie had any kind of character growth or redemption. Her characteristics were described by Satch but we never ever saw that even when she claimed to be done. And you’d think that communication would be important to her after her divorce, N O P E. It wasn’t convincing at all to see Billie get her groove back. As for “part 2” I don’t even want to get into that. I feel like it took away from Billie’s growth and changed the narrative of the story line.
This wasn’t a terrible book. I feel like others will take away something they need from the book. I personally just wasn’t a fan of the story line.

I so related to this book like I'm sure so many other women have done because this happened to me, the only difference was I didn't want my piece of scum bag back. Billie Tarrow is a women scorned and hurting. Two years away and now she's back in her home town looking for revenge and the ride this story takes us on, in trying to get that revenge is just so good.
Satcher Gable has adored Billie for ten long years, even when she was married to his best friend Woods and now she's back his hopes are raised but this story is far from straight forward in any way.
The writing was superb, the characters were everything and I instantly connected with them all, even the annoying ones. At first you are swayed to Billie's camp, then things start to happen and you are swayed a different way; your mind playing tricks on who's side or opinion you should listen to or take. Obviously full of emotions from all parties, lots of angst and different opinions going on and just when you think Billie is going down a certain path, this author takes you down a different one altogether.
I LOVED Satcher, tolerated Woods and Billie had all my sympathy because I felt her pain because I had been there and experienced some of what she had gone through.
Sometimes frustrating beyond belief, there were moments of complete despair, moments of joy and happiness; the story was witty, sarcastic and just bloody awesome in all ways. Go grab it NOW !!!!

I downloaded it off the back of reading one other Tarryn Fisher book (The Wives) and it was even better than I could have hoped!
I’m emotionally exhausted! The characters leap off the page, they feel like you know them and as a result you get carried up in the story.
I adore Stacher. I empathised with Billie and Woods needed a chastity belt - whilst reading the book these people feel like actual people not characters in a book. I was that emotionally invested in their lives my head is spinning. It was a bonus that this book is set in New York and it’s my favourite place in the whole world.
I need a lie down and a stiff drink to recover from this one......and I won’t forget the ice! 😘

I've just finished reading and i'm honestly not sure what to to write for this review. Anything i want to write would be a spoiler, and i hate those, so all i'm going to say is Tarryn doesn't write characters she writes real people with flaws and hang-ups and real emotions, none more so than Billie Tarrow.
If you've never read anything by Tarryn then you're in for a wild ride and if you have then this is Tarryn at her best. I loved it and can't wait for The Wives.
