There was a surprising quiet in the house while they were testing them out on an iPad. We plan to use them on road trips this summer. The volume knob is very hard to turn even for me, but that means they should have even more difficulty.
The middle setting seems to be right. More detailed control is still done by using he volume on the device. I would recommend. For under $20, the restricted (limited) volume is good. Initial durability seems good but time will tell.
UPDATE: Just bought another pair for my second child and the price is now $7.95! You can't beat that especially given how well the first set works.
UPDATE 1/2/2018: These headphones have now been carried all over the country on multiple flights, stuffed into my daughter's backpack, sat on, left lying around, used for countless hours in the car, on the plane, and many mornings when I don't want to be woken up by my kids. Now 18 months later they are still functioning perfectly.
Turns out that you pretty much get fleeced on kids headphones, and $20 is maybe just higher than average. The FSL Protec kids headphones appeared to be the best value for highly rated kids headphones at $14, and six bucks is six bucks...
Upon arrival the Kidzgear clamshell packaging looked nicer, and was clearly intended for retail. The FSL headphones came in a cardboard box with a picture printed on it. When I opened each package my first thought was that the Kidzgear set had WAY too many moving parts. There is a slider on each side that is poorly supported, and the sliders are connected to the cups with pieces of plastic that are hinged on both ends. The FSL set has a slider on each side that is fully encased in plastic, and no hinges.
The Kidzgear set has a thin wire going to each cup. There is inline volume control- but the sliding switch can move a total of about 1/4", so don't expect to be able to make fine adjustments easily. The volume limiting feature is actually a separate 6" cord that you have to plug into your device first. It's also black, and kind of takes away from the pink headphones and cord.
The FSL set has a single, thick cord going to the left cup. There is a (very) thin wire that is tucked into the headband for the right cup. There is no inline volume control, but the volume limiter is built into the left ear cup. You press the dial and rotate to change from three limits (think medicine bottle, but harder). It is preset to the middle one, which I determined to be most appropriate after trying all three.
The ear cups on the Kidzgear headphones are definitely more comfortable, but I've owned headphones that were similarly constructed, and the material that covers the foam is very thin and fragile.
The FSL set has standard on-ear headphone foam with no cover. They aren't uncomfortable, just not quite as nice feeling.
The Kidzgear set has pretty good sound for kids headphones. I played some Mumford and Sons, and music and vocals were clear.
The sound of the FSL set was not quite as good. They are a touch quieter (on the middle setting) than the Kidzgear with volume limiter, which may have contributed, but I still don't think they were as clear.
Ultimately I have to give the nod to the FSL headphones. 30% cheaper, better built, and sleeker volume limiter wins out over comfort and sound quality when these will be used for abcmouse.com and Mickey mouse clubhouse. I'm glad our girly girl got the Kidzgear, and our rough and tumble boy got the FSL set.
