It's that good.
You may be on the fence, you may think, noir? I don't think I like noir, I'm not sure a Hollywood period-piece in the noir genre is for me. I like comic books!
I will simply ask you this, do you love a great story in a visual format? You do? Then you're in for a treat.
You will hate to love and love to hate all of the main characters in this book, it's absolutely dripping with fleshed-out living, breathing, interesting characters with plausible arcs and quirks.
The story is full of intrigue and the goings-on of the period is truly interesting stuff, as are the references and 'outings' of the era.
I believe The Fade Out to be one of the finest examples of the Graphic Novel medium. There is excellence of execution in all facets of this book. All three of Brubaker, Phillips and Breitweiser work in symphonic harmony on this project, it's truly a work of art in all three regards, story, illustration and colouring.
The mood and setting and environment are palpable, you can feel all of it.
This book doesn't receive the credit it deserves, it's very strong work.
