I watched this because I love (and lust after) Chris Messina, but it felt like someone shipped half of a movie by mistake. Just as it started to get going, the end credits rolled! It's a shame, too, because it had possibilities. Messina is one of our finest actors, and even with so little material, he made Davey interesting. I was uncomfortable watching him and his manic, party-animal style, and I thought for sure something bad would happen, but nothing ever did. Drama hinges on conflict that ultimately reveals a larger truth. But like so many indies, this film was an exact replica of real life, with no real artistic message. The conflict was mundane and there was nothing to be learned from it. (SPOILER ALERT) Davey's "big secret" wasn't all that big of a deal at all. He slept with his friend's wife while she was separated, YEARS before. And his other friend (not even the friend who was the husband) feels "betrayed" because he didn't know about it. It COULD have been a big deal and a real conflict had it been developed. You started to get a hint of that in the tearful scenes at the funeral between Davey and Kate, but then the end credits rolled! It was so abrupt, I said, "What? That was IT?" It felt like the movie was just starting when it ended. Messina is always excellent, so it's worth watching for him. But "Mystic River" this ain't.
The trailer looked like a slow burning movie, but with enough drama and comedy to keep me interested and entertained without silly slapstick or unrealistic drama. Well it was a slow burn, so slow that it started as an ember and slowly died out. I turned this movie off it was so painful to watch. Pass on this movie.
Living in the area, and in Fairhaven for a no umber of years, I was drawn to the movie to enjoy the scenery and how it was portrayed by the film company. I was not disappointed. Camera angles and composition of scenes added perspectives that pleased me. Poetic license, I imagine, allowed them to use Lees Market in Westport, 40 minutes away, for food shopping when there are a dozen major supermarkets closer by - albeit not so quaint-looking as Lee's for sure. As far as the plot - eh. Actors were skilled and individually compelling but story line did not hold me and appeared somewhat unresolved in my mind. The Big Chill it was not.

I hated this film but I kind of think that was half the point. The protagonists are hardly any happier in the end than in the beginning and that troubles me. It makes me question my own life. The vulgar and base sexuality, the restlessness and general unhappiness of nearly all the characters, the lack of stable relationships, the heavy weight of unpleasant emotions - this film was hard to watch. Sarah Paulson was o great in it. I hated Chris Messina for playing a character so rough and vulgar and unappealing convincingly. Where is the sweet Danny Castellano? Crush my dreams you know. But thats what makes it great. One of those films that I never want to see again, yet I cant deny being powerfully moved by it.

Very disappointing I grew up in Fairhaven and not one person that we knew and a lot of my class were not fisherman. They didn’t show any of the nicer parts of Fairhaven and made it look like a low class place to live. The beauty of the town that Henry Huddleston Rogers built and gave were not shown the opening picture of the high school was beautiful but the beautiful library he built the Townhall the Unitarian church The park he gave and they drove down the worst parts of the city it looked more like a Achunet Where the factories were then Fairhaven.
Big Chris Messina fan! Starting to say the same about Sarah Paulson after her role in 'Blue Jay'. This movie? Liked it, but wanted to love it. Each character had their own story to tell and it kept going back and forth a little too much, for me, without leading up to a finish.

2nd time try with Amazon to get this DVD and 2nd time it had poor quality video. I tried to get it when it first came out and there were quality problems then too. Video is not smooth, jumps every second or two. Very disappointed since this is a repeat occurence and the same problem.
