Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-6–By ably retranslating 40 of Andersen's best-known tales, Philip succeeds in restoring the original conversational intimacy between the storyteller and listeners. While the selections frequently end in rejection, humiliation, or disappointment, they are saved…by the salt of Andersen's wit and the acuteness of his observation, the translator says in a substantive and informative introduction. Brent's elegant watercolors make frequent use of gold leaf as emphasis and borders for both the illustrations and each page of text. Families will find much to cherish in this beautifully designed presentation.–Susan Hepler, formerly at Burgundy Farm Country Day School, Alexandria, VA

Hans Christian Andersen (/ˈhɑːnz ˈkrɪstʃən ˈændərsən/; Danish: [hanˀs kʰʁæsd̥jan ˈɑnɐsn̩] ( listen); often referred to in Scandinavia as H. C. Andersen; 2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875) was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories, called eventyr in Danish or "fairy-tales" in English, express themes that transcend age and nationality.

Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling", and many more.

His stories have inspired ballets, both animated and live-action films, and plays.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not ideal for younger kids
By Roman L. on October 26, 2019
I ordered this book for a friend's newborn baby, excited to give them a bright, colorful, decorative book with gilded pages and illustrations. I waited weeks for the delivery. Well, the book was clearly remade since some of the older customer reviews from four or five years ago. This is not the beloved purple-cover Reader's Digest version that I wanted. This version looks, feels, and reads like a textbook. The 2019 Throne Classics edition is 700+ pages of drab, monotonous, dense text. I can't even comment on the translation, because I was so disappointed with the book I got in the mail that I didn't sit down to read through it much at all. I'm sure this is good for young adults and college students with a fascination for the material, so this isn't a one-star item, but this is certainly a disappointment based on my expectations and not ideal for younger kids and their storytime.

3.0 out of 5 stars Colorful illustrations
By K Watson on January 25, 2015
This collection is translated by Neil Philip and illustrated by Isabelle Brent, (published by The Reader's Digest, 2004). For me, the illustrations are just as important as the ideas in story books. In this book, every page of text has a decorative border and of the 351 pages, 66 of them are colorful, full page illustrations. The animal and nature images are more realistically drawn than the human ones--the people tend to appear more flat and less detailed. All the drawings are framed by a wide, patterned border, which in some cases detracts from the charm of the central picture.
