New York Times best-selling author TJ Klune invites you back to the land of Verania in a new collection of short stories starring the beloved characters from the Tales of Verania series.
In the opening story - "The Unicorn in the Tower" - Gary is a princess trapped in a stone tower by the evil Lady Tina DeSilva, who plans on sacrificing him on the first full moon after his 18th birthday. With help from his friends - a bird named Tiggy and a mangy weasel called Sam - Gary interviews potential suitors to rescue him and love him above all others, as he so rightly deserves.
"The Unicorn in the Tower" is followed by "Sam and the Beanstalk", wherein a poor farm boy exchanges his family’s bull for magical beans and the promise of treasure in the sky. But when he climbs the beanstalk, Sam finds things are not as he expected them to be.
"The Good Boy" sees Todd and his immaculate ears taking center stage. When Todd’s father dies, he leaves his son in the care of his evil stepmother and two stepsiblings who live to make Todd’s life a living hell. It’s not until the household receives an invitation to attend a ball for the mysterious Sir that Todd begins to wish for a life beyond what he knows.
"David’s Dragon", the final - and only canonical - tale, is set a thousand years before the rise of the dark wizard Myrin. It begins simply: a lonely boy in a small village befriends a dragon. What follows is a story of love and sacrifice, hope and heartbreak, and what it means to earn your place amongst the stars.
Welcome back to Verania. It’s going to be a hell of a ride.

I'd highly recommend reading the other Verania books before this one, as a majority of the stories are delightful twists on pre-existing characters. This book of tales would still be enjoyable without preexisting knowledge of the characters, just potentially not as much. (Also Gary and Kevin can be a lot to the uninitiated, let's be real)
The first three of the book’s fairly long stories are riffs on familiar fairy tales, but using characters (with random abandon) familiar from the remarkable Verania series. The Unicorn in the Tower gives us a laugh-out-loud raunchy version of Rapunzel; Sam and the Beanstalk is a sweet, romantic reboot of its fairytale avatar, in which the giant is a sweetie and Sam is desperate to help his family out.
The Good Boy takes a slightly darker tone, but still delivers an updated morality tale based on Cinderella, which manages to be both comic and thoughtful. Oh, yeah, it’s got a kind of BDSM vibe, which caught me a little by surprise, but also made me smile.
The last and longest story, David’s Dragon, is a deep back-story tale about the Verania we got to know and love in the series. It gets quite dark, reminding us that fairytales were often dark, highlighting the worst traits of human greed and prejudice, while emphasizing the strength of human will and its potential for endurance.
In all of these stories, tongue-in-cheek or dead serious, TJ Klune himself is ever-present, giving his readers a glimpse into his worldview, and into his very heart.
If you don’t know Klune’s writing, this anthology will seem, well, peculiar; clearly he is aiming at the audience who knows and loves him. For those in that group (including myself), the stories are full of fresh delights and familiar insights.
The Unicorn in the Tower
2 Stars
This was just pure silliness. It is TJ's version of the story of Rapunzel with Gary as the main character. There is a whole lot of sexual innuendos and more of Gary and Kevin than I ever wanted to hear lol
Sam & the Beanstalk
3 Stars
Instead of Jack and the Beanstalk it is Sam. Sam gets the beans and in his Beanstalk is a castle where a giant lives with his friends he has collected over the years. Initially Sam was looking to find treasure to help his family instead he found himself friends for a life time.
The Good Boy
3 Stars
TJ's version of Cinderella. In this one Todd, with the best ears, is the main character. Gary is the evil step mother and Justin and Tina the step sisters. It is all casts really perfectly especially when Mama is the Fairy Drag Mother. The one thing I didn't like was how evil Gary was. Gary can be a b**ch but usually it is for reasons and also it is usually directed at people who deserve it. His treatment of sweet, sweet Todd was not deserved. It was one of the first times I did not like Gary. Yikes! However, there was a kinkly ever after and I appreciated it.
David's Dragon
3 stars
When David was born he always had this voice in the back of his mind connected to him. As he grew older the voice became louder until one day he met the creature behind the voice (a dragon). The two become friends and grow to love one another. This is all in secret. David lives his regular life in the city where his mom is mayor, his dad by her side and his best friend/ husband Levi.
David keeps his secret for many years afraid if anyone knew they would try to hurt his friend. Turns out David was right. David suffers a great loss. He goes on a journey to find the oldest dragon in existence when he meets him he is set on a task. If David completes this task he will then be reunited with his dragon. David is determined to have that happen so, he does as he was told.
This is the story of how the city of Locke's became to be. It was sad and heartbreaking but IMO a bit boring. I wanted more. I needed the drama of what happened to the town's people after lol
Top reviews from other countries

The books are unashamedly silly, camper than Christmas and full of warmth and heart. Unusual friendships and found families are celebrated, and the plot veers from the ludicrous to the heartwarming and back seamlessly. Such a cliche (but they do tend to be true) to say that I howled with laughter and then towards the end just bawled like a baby.
I suspect Tj could write instruction manuals for German furniture and I would devour it.
