Sergeant Osu Sybutu of the Legion had a simple mission. Take five men and travel unobserved to a location in the capital where he would deliver a coded phrase to a contact. Simple, that is, except for the fact that there was a war going on, and all the different factions he had to pass by on the way would cheerfully shoot him on sight. And that was only if the planet didn’t kill him first.

Militia Sergeant Vetch Arunsen’s task, however, was far more complex. Shepherd a group of hated rivals across the frozen wastes, keeping them safe from everyone who wanted to kill them, which was pretty much everyone. Including the oddball troopers under Arunsen’s own command, who would happily shoot the Legion soldiers if given the slightest opportunity.

What a story. Assigned a posting to a planet with a most inhospitable environment, the legion was given a grueling task of making salvage operations for an ancient construct, more manageable. Despite the tedious nature of that task, they had the equipment and personnel to accomplish their mission. Of course these kind of assignments rarely go off without a hitch or some difficulties cropping up. So add in a competing military outfit, rebel forces, possible alien vampires or similar biological agent, distrustful natives, mysterious third parties, and cold weather that makes a blizzard seem like a minor inconvenience... The Legion has it's work cut out for them, and it's anything but a small task. For a legendary group known for holding the line, it's near impossible when they are blurred and altered to hardly recognizable forms. It soon becomes obvious that there's much more at stake and going on than they first realized.

I found this to be a very well written story with characters that I came to appreciate. Old enemies must unite and face new challenges and obstacles at every point. Although far from united, even at the conclusion of the novel, they manage to find a way to keep things together and fulfill their assigned mission. The only reason for giving this four stars was my general dislike for “Warhammer” style situations and themes. If Black Library style novels are your genre of choice, this is very much a great addition to your library.

This book is from a new author and it delivers a great deal. It sets the stage for what could be an amazing series using some of the most unique aliens ever encountered in reading sic-fi. There are multiple sets of strong alien story lines to be developed and intertwined with the main characters - on a personal and society basis. Plenty of battles - land, air and space - with the promise of colossal battles ahead. Grab the book, sit back and enjoy the read - get ready for the next in ther serores. This is a story that needs telling.

A terrific book introducing a new series in the Human Legion Universe. Great characters, terrific world building and fast-paced story development translates into a must read for fans of military science fiction. While set in the Human Legion Universe, you can read this book without having read any other books that preceded it, although this one will make you want to read those. The Legion and the Militia are two sides of the same coin - much like the Marines and the Army in our own world with the constant fight for funding, roles and inter-service rivalry. From this rivalry and hostility, elements from both need to work together to form something new - Chimera Company. Intrigue, action and aliens make this a book to add to your library!

There’s a mystery to die for beneath the ice.

This new book from Tim Taylor had me hooked from day one. It takes place on an ice planet (think 100 degrees below) and very shortly, I felt cold every time I picked it up!
Two different military groups, the Legion and the Militia, are vying for control of this world and what with the conditions, the crazy yet interesting new characters, the many odd beasts they have to rely on and even invaders, this makes for a fun read. Chimera Company is a mix of criminal misfits and current and ex military given an almost impossible mission to deliver a cryptic message: one they must risk their lives and survive for.
I liked the banter, the weird creatures and impossible conditions that made this story worthwhile. Kudos to Tim Taylor for his new ideas and descriptions of this icy world.
Don’t miss this one!

This was a great start to a new series. A completely messed up situation, a 2 way invasion, several factions who are supposed to be allies but who hate one another more than they do the invaders and an environment that will with cold malice kill all of them. The setting was interesting with a fully fleshed out galactic history, aliens that were weird and interesting and a threat that was as old as it was nasty. What made this first entry so good was that like real history and events there were so many factions with shifting objectives and loyalties and motivations that at first glance everything appeared to be a hot mess. I'll be buying the second entry as I want to know what will happen next.
