Gr 9 Up–Kristina, the meth-addicted antiheroine of Crank (2004) and Glass (2007), has five children by four different men. Fallout is about the lives of her three oldest children. Hunter lives with his grandmother in Nevada. He cheats on his girlfriend and smokes a lot of dope. Autumn lives with her sweet aunt and gruff granddad in Texas. She has OCD and knows little about her mother. Summer lives in a trailer in California with her father and a string of abusive/slutty/stupid girlfriends. She hates pretty much everyone. Hopkins's not-quite poetry is as solid as ever, though her use of visual formations gets more mystifying and extraneous with each novel. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that Glass is fresh in the minds of most readers. As such, the Venn diagram of Kristina's baby-daddies, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and drug buddies -is impossible to follow, and may frustrate even the most interested readers. So much deciphering cripples the pace of Fallout. The plot is choked with the perpetual damage of meth addiction–there's too much message and not enough action. Hopkins spreads the narration too thin between three unlikable narrators, and none is ever fully realized. I was adopted at birth and raised by a great, loving older couple. I grew up in Palm Springs CA, although we summered in Napa and Lake Tahoe, to avoid those 120 degree summers. After my adopted parents died, I did find my birth mother, who lives in Michigan with my half sister.

I studied journalism in college, but left school to marry, raise kids and start my own business--a video store, before the mega-chains were out there. After a divorce, I met my current husband and we moved to Tahoe to become ski bums and otherwise try to find our dreams. At that time, I went to work for a small alternative press, writing stories and eventually editing.

When we moved down the mountain to the Reno area, I started writing nonfiction books, many of which you can see here. The rest are viewable on my personal website. I also continued to freelance articles for newspapers and magazines.

All that has changed, with the publication of my novel, CRANK, which has led to a valued career writing YA novels in verse, all of which explore the more difficult situations young adults often find themselves in. Will I ever write one in prose? No doubt! But, for the moment, writing novels in verse fulfills two needs: writing poetry and writing fiction. The combination is so interesting!

I read this book (the entire trilogy) as recovering meth addict with three small children and I can say that it reigns true. I am grateful to have going on three years clean from "the monster" and am living a perfect, quiet life with my children while they are still young. This book particularly really puts what could be my children's life in perspective for me, as it is from the view of Kristina's oldest three children as teenagers. Ellen Hopkins has once again captivated me. I couldn't put the book down.

After reading all of Ellen Hopkins novels, both teenage and adult, readers have followed the intricate lives of teenagers growing up, the parents' choices, and how the choices of all the characters intertwine and affect the other characters! Written in prose verse, Hopkins offers a new approach to reading and story telling.

Fallout continues the story that started with Crank, followed by Glass, both of which focus on the story of Kristina and her struggle with addiction. Fallout focuses on three of Kristina's children - Summer, Autumn, and Hunter (who we meet in Glass as a baby) and their stories growing up. Fallout is an amazing continuation of the stories and offers such character development and details throughout the story. Hopkins truly does it again!

I would recommend this book to anyone who has already read the first two novels and is a Hopkins fan! I would suggest this book for teenagers or older! A really great read!

Love this trilogy! I do wish they kept the original covers.. but I do understand how it could be a little controversial. I first read them when I was in high school, let someone borrow them and never returned. I have never been one that liked to read, but when I found this was written in poetry form, it caught my attention. Makes it easy to read but also makes you think. Definitely a must read!

Pretty Good Ending, but Hard to Follow

I found the conclusion of Crank to be less than the reviews posted and rating of a 4.7 when the other books were a 4.5. In my opinion, the books gradually got worse and the ending of Fallout didn't resolve anything. I much prefered Kristina's side rather than her obviously doomed children, each involved in drugs or unprotected sex... having feelings of panic often, asthma, anger problems, schizophrenia, alcohol consumption to ease worries. Not every kid would turn out bad. It was just a sad ending and I didn't get anything out of this confusing, switch sides story.

I can't say much about the story line as I don't want to ruin it for readers. It's a change from Crank and Glass which I guess was good but I kind of missed the point of view change. If there was a fourth book I would have immediately ordered it on my Kindle to continue with the story but I understand why the author chose to stop at three. The trilogy was completely enjoyable and I have recommended it to lots of people.

I found this series in general inspiring. I have had the personal experience of crystal tearing apart my family. It wasn't myself, but the uncle I was living with at the time. At the time he was living with us he was going through a very bad breakup and was in the process of going blind due to a car accident. We knew he had issues with crystal before but thought it was all done and over with. Little did we know it is nearly impossible to get rid of this monster once you start following IT. I am absolutely in love with this series. Possibly for the main reason that I can halfway relate to the pain and agony these children have felt through their lifetime.

I have never felt like I did for Kristina and her family. They are real, pure, raw emotions that are indescribable. Hunter, Summer, and Autumn. You feel them, you feel for them. Amazing dynamic characters that come together in a way that might not be the best but was right for the time being. I fell in love with them, just the same as I did for Kristina years ago. Fallout was the best ending that I think it could have possibility had to this powerful trilogy. Ellen Hopkins is a great writer and she's couldn't of done a better job. Best of luck to the real "Kristina" and their family.
