Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-As he did in The Mommy Book and The Daddy Book (both Little, Brown, 2002), Parr introduces children to an array of families. Whimsical illustrations featuring neon colors and figures outlined in black show big ones and small ones, and families that look alike and relatives who look just like their pets. The art features both human and animal figures; thus, pigs depict both a family that likes to be clean, and one that likes to be messy. Some families include stepmoms, stepdads, stepsisters, or stepbrothers; some adopt children. Other families have two moms or two dads, while some children have only one parent. Interspersed with the differences among families are the ways they are alike: all like to hug each other, are sad when they lose someone they love, enjoy celebrating special days together, and can help each other to be strong. This concept book celebrating the diversity of family groups is distinguished by its sense of fun.

2.0 out of 5 stars Racially insensitive.
By shawna on March 2, 2019
The dark-skinned family with afro hair looks like their dog? I purchased this book for a class that I teach but will be sending it back. Two stars for an effort towards inclusivity but I would never recommend a book that essentially says that people with dark skin and afro look like dogs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teaches diversity appreciation -- and opposites!
By D'Arcy on August 19, 2016
We love Todd Parr's books and this is one of his best. I love that the book shows my son that families come in all kinds of varieties -- but no matter what, families love each other. It's a great book for teaching him an acceptance of and appreciation for diversity (diversity of family types but also of individual people). The book has the added bonus of teaching opposites as family types are shown in contrast with an opposite family type (families that all look alike vs. ones of different colors, loud vs. quiet families, etc.). I also LOVE that it normalizes families with gay parents. My son loves hearing about the families and seeing the bright, fun artwork.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids and parents.
By CuriousMe on November 8, 2014
My 3-year old and I both love this book. At first I worried that it would be too simple for his age but the concepts are something we can talk about as we read. It's good for a quick 'last book' before lights out or as a discussion book on families. My lil guy has picked it out to read almost every night since we received it. I'd strongly recommend it for other families who want to educate their kids on the many types of families or just have a fun book to read.

Addresses but is not limited to, step-siblings, adoption, different color family members, different dietary restrictions in a family, big families, single parent family, same sex parent families and more.
