Ulrich (PhD, Westminster Theological Seminary) has been pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Wexford, Pennsylvania, and associate professor of Old Testament at Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. His articles have been included in the Journal of Biblical Counseling, Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, and Westminster Theological Journal. Another helpful selection from the "Gospel According to the Old Testament" series. Part commentary, part devotional, this book does a wonderful job of interacting with a diverse range of scholarship in a nuanced and thoughtful way. The author does not hide from counterargument, but instead repeatedly cites it and then explains what he believes to be more consistent and faithful interpretation. While he ultimately disagrees with the popular feminist analysis of Ruth (that Ruth's story primarily serves to illustrate two women's power struggle against patriarchy, and that Ruth's marriage to Boaz is an unfortunate concession to the male-dominated culture in which she finds herself) he does take feminist scholars seriously and even affirms some of their claims. Ultimately, however, he argues persuasively that the primary purpose of the book of Ruth is to reveal who God is and how he works redemptively and providentially in the lives of those who put their faith in him.
