While the fifth Big Box came with the base game and four full expansions, Big Box 6 (2017) is more in line with previous Big Boxes, combining the first two and arguably best full expansions, plus a number of mini expansions. In fact, this box is identical to Big Box 4, adding to it the River and the Abbot mini expansions, both of which now come packaged with the base game. The remaining mini-expansions are difficult to obtain on their own (at least in the US).
So, Big Box, or Base + Inns & Cathedrals + Traders & Builders? Well let's assume that you don't already own a version of Carcassonne, because if you do, the big box may not be worthwhile. Even though there's new artwork, older versions and newer versions are still compatible to play with each other. The Big Box is only a few bucks more than the base + first two expansions, and if you're a completionist or a collectionist, then you'll probably enjoy the other mini expansions that come with the box. This is a good start to building your collection. It's also a good means to itself. That is, you could do just fine buying the contents of the big box and no other expansions. The only downside to the big box is that the box is, well, big. It's really big. Perhaps unnecessarily big. This is nothing new. It's the same size as all previous big boxes and the same complaint pops up each time. That said, I don't regret purchasing the big box, even if I'll pursue a smaller tile box for storage and transport. For the record, all contents of the Big Box, plus more expansions should be able to fit nicely into the base game's box, especially with custom inserts. But for me, the few extra bucks (it was around $4-5 at the time) for all of the extra mini-expansions seemed worth it over buying expansions separately.
But if you just want to buy everything piecemeal and spread the cost out over time, or you just want a simpler version of the game without all of the added complexities of the expansions (I do recommend at least one of the first two expansions, if not both, after that I can understand now more expansions just make the game more complicated), then the big box may not be for you.
Is this expensive? Yes. But if you don't already own any of these expansions, this is a cost-effective way to get them! Even if you already own the base game, both Traders & Builders and Inns & Cathedrals cost $18. If you figure each of the five mini-expansions is worth $8 (and you can't get them anywhere else as far as I'm aware), that's $76 worth of tiles and playing pieces right there. I bought the Big Box for around $90 and I would do it again.
Also, in case you're curious, our other favorite games for two players are Sequence (30ish mins), Machi Koro (45 min-1 hr), and Power Grid Deluxe (1.5-2 hrs). As much as we like those, however, Carcassonne is definitely the most-played game in our house!
As you can see, the tiles are 'punch out', and I had no problems with them. They come out very easily and with no tearing (as long as you're gentle).
The wooden pieces appeared consistent and well painted (an issue that appeared in base game reviews). I believe this version also includes an additional color.
The box comes with a nifty organizer. It could become troublesome if it is stored upside-down due to the recessed storage area (an artifact of it's delivery).
Overall I look forward to finally playing this game! It's a good bargain if you know you'll want the expansions, otherwise the base game will better fit your needs.
When I saw that they had made a box with many of the expansions, I was really excited. Now we can spice the game up even more!
It’s a tile laying game that requires strategy and a bit of luck of the draw to earn the most points by the end of the game. Truly a game that should be a staple for all gamers.

Delivery was swift and product arrived in perfect condition (this often isn't the case when buying games online). The included expansions work very well together although I wouldn't recommend playing with all 11 at once unless you've got an evening to spare (3 at a time seemed to work best for learning the rules, plus of course you can just add certain elements from expansions, e.g. just adding the builder to speed up gameplay). The box itself has very satisfying storage compartments for each expansion so you can keep everything separate (no more cramming as many expansions as possible into the base game box).
Overall best board game purchase of 2018 for me.
Extensions spicy up the game for experts.
The slots help organizing nicely!
Where was this game when I was a kid!!?
very fun game.
Carcassonne is easy to learn, but there's a good strategic aspect to it. I know a few people who have a solo variant on their tablet, and they use that to master different strategies to defeat their gaming buddies! The best way to get good at the game, though, is simply to play it a lot. The rules are clear, and while there may be some confusion with expansion rules when trying to play subsets, on the whole this is a great family or adult game. Also, kids seem to like it too, although my experience playing with those under about 15 is limited.
This box comes with 11 add ons as well, and the instruction book has them all and suggests a progression for adding the expansions so you dont feel lost with tons of new rules or lose the experience of the core game or nuances each expansion brings. one of the things about this item that makes me so happy being OCD for organization is that the box has a plastic insert with spaces to keep each expansion separate and organized, as well as the game pieces. it has a extra room if you need to have more game pieces but it doesnt really have a place for the tiles that would come with it. id have to say that the only thing wrong with this is that it doesnt have room in the box for you to keep other expansions. however youll also probably never need another expansion ever if you get this set.
at under $90 for this set, it is an amazing deal you will not regret. it may seen steep for a board game but it will bring you so much more joy. one night i have 3 friends over and play for 4 hours; compare that to 4 people going to see a movie. it would cost about the same but Carcassonne lasts longer and we had way more fun. plus we can bust it out again next week for free. if it gets old we add an expansion, there are 11 of them.
easy to learn and the value you get for the big box is excellent.
It would be well over 200 dollars to buy the same amount of expansions and the base game by themselves.
I also recommend the fields and sheep expansion 9 which is not in this big box but adds a lot of fun to the game also.
Saludos!
