I'm biased, as I'm a father to a beautiful 3 year old daughter

This was actually a really good movie. Russell is getting used to those shock treatments by now I would think lol. I'm a big fan of his, and all the actors did well in this film. There's a lot of garbage to sift through to find a decent movie, this is one of them. So check it out. You won't be disappointed.

As a daughter who never experienced fatherly love, I avoided this movie for a period of time. The pain sometimes is so great, the consequences of growing up without father's protection and love are so big, the void is so deep...
Now I am a wife and a mother of two sons, I live with three men and struggle every day. I can't receive love simply and openly. I can't love as I should either. And knowing that is hard.
The movie is great (as any movie with Crowe).
It shows the battle, the emptiness, the greatnesses of father's soul...
Did father's love fill the void in Katie's heart? No. I think it created even deeper void. She knew, no one ever will be able to love her as much as him. She learned, that such a deep all consuming love does not exist for long and she was afraid to love and be loved that much.
The movie also shows the despair and lostness of any woman without man's greatness and dedication to be with her and care for her always. But still, it is better to love, than to be loved.
Our ability to love makes us "well lived" people.

A movie that makes you smile, a movie that may make you cry. Incredible warmth coming from Russell Crowe towards his daughter and of course she to him - the closeness we all wish to have with our family. The entire movie was real to life, not the more far-fetched scenarios people seem to enjoy - although some reviewed it as 'predictable' - I found none of that. Through the flip flops from little girl to adult, it was easy to follow, and nothing was ever lost in the story, but it made you see the transitions in her personality and why. Most of us reflect on our upbringing/past to understand our personality and behaviors. This can be a very personal, thought-provoking movie and it could be mothers and daughters or sons and fathers, it won't make a difference. My best advice is to watch the movie, think for yourself, and not concern yourself with the professional critics. So many of the reviews were so off-base, missed the delights and the heartbreaks, had a lack of human compassion, were intent on echoing negativity - make up your own mind; bet you watch it more than once!

This movie helped me to understand something about myself and why I detach from getting invested in people. When you've had pivotal losses so young you tend to not want the pain of relationship and so you keep it superficial. This is a paradox for me because my deepest desire is to love deeply with no holds barred. This movie gave me lots to think about.

Few movies actually stand up to the category they're in, but this one does. It is for sure a DRAMA. Also a very good thriller. I enjoyed it thoroughly from beginning to end. Well done.
It would be so interesting though if they made the horror version and had the mom cause the psychotic breaks due to haunting him and the little girl is the only one who could see her. All the while, whenever she was bonding with her father the mom would always disappear so they were stuck like glue to one another. Which caused more problems. The aunt and step-uncle trying to pry the little girl from her father was like a death sentence. The little girl knew this. So she did her best to hate them both so they'd change their mind. She often spoke to her mother about leaving her dad alone but the mother always responded that the father could do nothing to help her and would hurt her as he did years before and her father did as a child and that the only person she ever truly trusted was her sister and that's why she wanted her to live with them instead of her dad. The hauntings become worse and worse. His doctors are increasingly concerned. The daughter tries to explain but each time he books her an appointment to undergo some therapy with the conclusion being she's fibbing due to her emotional crisis of losing her mother whom she blames for dying. During those evaluations and therapy sessions, her father is seriously injured and almost to the point of death. To the outside world, he's just suicidal. He slips into a coma and upon his wake, his daughter notices when she's forced to be away from him he no longer is bruised, injured, etc. So she begins to watch him closely. His habits aren't his anymore. She notices these are things her mother did and she discovers it's her mom who has inhabited her dad's body. She acts as if she does not know and begins contemplating. Does she fight for her dad and risk her mom leaving his body but haunting him still and him possibly dying literally or does she allow her mom to rule her dad's body which she knows still contains his spirit which breaks through at times? She decides her mom and dad inhabiting the same body is better than the both of them dying so she continues with her life, she grows up and she holds this as a secret. She doesn't entertain people in her life because she'd have to account for the extremely unique behavior of her mom-dad. She does however find this one guy who brought to her a theory that her parents fused together. She opens up and they become closer. The guy leaves a detail out though, he is the son of the woman the father had an affair with the years ago that her mom refers to as the point of everlasting hurt. They fight on what to do but then there's a crash that leaves the mother's sister in a coma and there's a chance that they can have both their parents back.

It has been too long since I've watched a film this good. Well written and beautifully acted, it tells the story of a father and daughter struggling to live their lives after the wife/mother died in an accident, and how the father struggled with illness and money. The film goes back and forth between the young daughter and her life 25 years later. It's a poignant story of the love and commitment a father has to his daughter and how it impacted her in her adult years. I really can't say anymore or I'll spoil it for you. Watch it. You'll be glad you did.

The excellent acting pulled off this film. The young girl was a precocious character and charming actress. The adult girl's self-destructive sexual activities as a way to cope in the wake of mind-numbing grief seems realistic. The father's self-sacrificial efforts, the daughter's abiding hope and perseverance in helping a traumatized girl, and the boyfriend's creativity and forgiveness elevated the movie. I even saw redeeming qualities in the clingy aunt by the end. Some critics think the movie is over-sentimental, but I suspect those critics have not been around many traumatized people.

I like this movie but found it sad and I wasn't sure what was happening till later on in the movie. I like how she did find true love. Then made a terrible mistake that was hard for her to control.
