5.0 out of 5 stars Great lessons for your kiddos!
By Manbeena Anand on September 1, 2020
Wow! What an amazing read for your kiddos (and adults, too!) to learn about perseverance, commitment and self-reliance! I had certainly heard about Fauja Singh's record-breaking marathons and been awed by the fact that he started running after he was 80. But, I had no idea about his childhood or experiences growing up in Punjab. The story was extremely well written and tells the tale of an extraordinary person. There are so many aspects of his life journey that are relatable -- a child growing up with a disability, bullying, being an immigrant, finding your calling late in life, etc. Not only that, but the illustrations are beautiful! The image I included was one of my favorite pages from the book. The way the illustrator added prints to Fauja's grandmother's kameez (far right) and added the traditional Punjabi embroidery of phulkari for the woman's scarf (far left) brought these characters to life. I also appreciated seeing the Sikh kara (bracelet) and the Punjabi parandi (decorative tassels braided in hair). These subtle, yet powerful images drew me in to the story even more. Seeing Sikh characters and traditional Sikh and Punjabi imagery in this book brought a smile to my face. I just had my first child a few months ago, and I can't wait to share this story of Fauja Singh with her (and her cousins)!
