5.0 out of 5 starsDon't start reading if you have to be up early
Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2021
First, this has to be one of the best written and most satisfying Christian books I've ever read! I love marriages of convenience stories. But all too often, we have to wait for the last few pages to see the marriage completed. There is nothing wrong with tasteful story lines of a marriage that has been consummated. Too often in Christian romances, it's taboo. It's so satisfying to see emotions and feelings that are what the majority of us have felt, portrayed. I also appreciated the fact that I could see a marriage not only fulfilled, but I got to read about the relationship growing and deepening.
Secondly, I am so appreciative of how the post Civil War in the South is portrayed, Again, Christian authors tend to write how they wish things had transpired over 100 years ago, instead of portraying the past in a compassionate, yet realistic way. History is history. I do not believe that all Southerners agreed with slavery, and I'm sure many had compassion on the plight of Blacks after they were freed. Many did not, and we are witnesses to the horrific acts that some committed. It is behavior that to most us now, seems incomprehensible. But these acts did happen, and because of what was acceptable during that time, the complications of how to handle the post war South, wasn't so easily determined. Yet, we are given a story of compassion mixed with reality. I, for one, am so thankful for that balance.
As I stated in my subject line, I started this book on a Sunday afternoon and couldn't put it down! I read well past my bedtime, despite having a very early morning. It is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It is the most satisfying books I've read in a long time. She is truly a gifted author!

Slow, a bit boring, and can easily guess all the outcomes. This book has been a let down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite

Not my favorite. I live this author and have read all her books. This one, sadly, just didn't do it for me. I found it predictable and slow. Still a Tamara Alexander fan though.

2.0 out of 5 stars Departure from clean content of her other books

Having read the author's last three books, set at Belle Meade and Belmont, I had greatly anticipated "To Win Her Favor." The writing style was excellent and the story engrossing, however, I was disappointed to come across rather explicit content and chose not to finish the book after reading about two thirds of it. Yes, I understand the main characters were married, but I feel like readers of Christian fiction should be spared any intimate details. I'm hoping Tamera Alexander will return to her earlier style of writing engaging historical fiction without details that prevent readers like me from finishing the story.

2.0 out of 5 stars The story was good, however
Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2015

The story was good, however, having read all of Ms Alexander's books before, I was very disappointed in the content of this one. I've always enjoyed how she can develop a character and how normal they seem and flawed, always having problems that they need to work through, with the help of God and each other. This book seemed to hint at those same things, but the secrets surrounding Cullen seemed anti-climactic in the end, with nothing for him to "work through". Also, VERY disappointed in the sexual content in this book. Reading the scene on the hillside, I actually wondered if someone else had written this book instead. Such a deviation from her normal writing! Several other bed scenes and one completely unnecessary one in the epilogue. If you have read her other books, well, this one read no different than a harlequin romance. Too much time focused on wanting sex, having sex and imagining sex to really develop an engaging story like her others. I hope she returns to her regular style of writing in her next.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed

A good read but I was disappointed with the intimacy scenes and how much detail they were given considering this is a Christian author whose other books I've read and loved. If not for those scenes I would have given this book 4 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars I have enjoyed reading Ms

I have enjoyed reading Ms. Alexander's novels. The storyline and characters come to life on the pages. With this particular novel I was not comfortable with the intimacy details of the couple portrayed. Because of that reason, I don't believe it falls under the category of a Christian story. And for that, I could only give it three stars. The other novels I have read of hers, have been five stars. I do hope she revisits her need to include intimate scenes in upcoming books. Her novels are enjoyable to read and do not need the sexual factor. The storyline holds its own weight.

1.0 out of 5 stars Have I read this before?

Having read romance novels since my teens, I understand that it is difficult to come up with something new when so many are being written every year. This story line felt like something I've read before. Well written, but I agree with other reviewers who were disappointed by the fact that this was the first of Tamera's books that does not come under the category of clean romance. I had not expected that. Perhaps the pressure to sell an ever increasing number of books is behind this? One star for that reason.

1.0 out of 5 stars Warning! Graphic descriptions of sensual intimacy and violence
Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2016

I am a great fan of Tamera Alexander but this novel was very disappointing. The story was good but the graphic descriptions of intimacy and brutality were unexpected and unappreciated. This in no way should have been published as a Christian book. I collect books that can be handed down to future generations and there is no way any one could read this book without immersing themselves in lust and sensuality.
