Good movie. Stephen Dorff does a great job, as does Val Kilmer.
Unlike most movies centered around prison, they don't throw you into the rape scenes. The threats are certainly implied several times, but most of the violence you'll see on-screen is just inmate on inmate fighting.
Pretty good mix of plot, action, and a touch of backstory.
You knew where the characters were coming from most of the time.
They could have explained more about what made Lt. Jackson the way he was.
I don't find a lot of replay value here, though.

I worked as a shift supervisor on death row at Holman Prison in Alabama for over 23 years. This movie to me was more about John Smith. I could relate to his friendship with Gordan. His final letter to Porter, where he would take out the population of the World really struck a nerve in me. I knew he meant it. I personally have been involved in several such situations, but John's final letter to Porter really tore my heart out. This is a prison movie recommended by an old head that will not disappoint.

I am a certified couch potato and love to watch movies and TV. This is one of the best 'prison' movies or movie for that matter that I have seen, and I've seen my fair share! Val Kilmer and Stephen Dorff are phenomenal and Harold Perrineau, Nate Parker and Nick Chinlund are awesome. After looking at some of the same TV shows and movies over and over (how's that for a waste of paying prime), I came across a movie that seemed interesting and I hit the jackpot.

It's not a terrible movie, and it starts out as an honest indictment of how screwed up the laws are when it comes to self defense and protecting your home and family, and at times it feels like a documentary, but it ultimately dissolves into this unrealistic "the real world isn't the real world" flick. Worth a watch.

Shows you how the penal system is screwed up

A guy protecting his family gets the wrong end of the stick. And now he has to survive in prison by leaving his past life and becoming one of the inmates to survive.
I really enjoyed this story, some didn’t and trash talk it. The premise of it is simple, a man trying to survive in prison so he can return to his wife and child

5.5/10 stars -- Oddly similar to 'Shot Caller'

Not much to say about this... it comes off as a different version of the movie Shot Caller (which I enjoyed more than this). Perhaps this is version 1.0 of the script.

I suspect if you like this movie, you'll like Shot Caller more.
